Test drive just wasn't enough time to realize the full level of suck. It was like one of the Motor Trend reviews of the Tacoma said:

Sorry it didn't work out for you. Life is too short so get what you really want and enjoy it. As you read in the links I posted above you will get a few to agree with you but the majority actually like their 4Runners and the performance. The 4Runner is not a vehicle for everyone as has been said time and time again.

Just add some 285s and a few hundred pounds off offroad gear, sliders, racks, bumpers, etc. You will forget you ever wanted it to go faster. I would lose a race to a Prius, but I will run that mofo over! :driving:

A couple tanks into my 2012 trail and i'm getting about 11.3 L/100km with 90%+ highway at 110km/h. That's only ~10% more fuel than my WRX.

To throw out an opposite argument, I came from a Hemi Grand Cherokee... and while I had more than enough power driving like a Grandma yielded 12.5-13.5 mpg city. I would rather drive the exact same way and get right around 18 mpg city, and the one time I have had to floor it in the few weeks since I purchased it I was very impressed with the power delivery.

I don't think you are going to find any better in this category until direct injection comes along... it's a heavy, brick shaped vehicle, with big tires...

For what it's worth on the MPG topic... I put a K&N filter in and instantly got an extra 2 mpg. Was getting 17.5 around town, now getting 19.5. Everything else the same.

For those who don't believe, I did this as well and experienced the same results. I added a K&N box filter and instantly saw my average mpg go up from ~16 to ~18 no joke. You can feel the power gain as well. Not a ton, but definitely noticeable.

Coming from a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon (3.8L V6 mini-van motor) that was fully-built on 36" Swampers, re-geared to 5.13's, a full roof rack and tent on top, fully loaded for camping on a weekend, I got 9-11mpg and spent most of the drive in 2nd gear (out of 4) just to stay with traffic.

With the 4Runner I'm getting 17.25 fully loaded with food/water for a week, 2 adults, 2 80lb dogs, and all the gear, up I-70 and all around the hills. (1762 total miles last trip)

It's about as drastic a difference as you can get, and I couldn't be happier.

Have realistic expectations of your vehicle and you'll be content. :noidea:
