I had a 2004 V8 AWD SE and it got avg. 17 mpg city and around 19-20 on the highway (calculated by hand, not the car computer). My 2007 V8 AWD limited with around 8K miles gets 14 1/2 to 15 mpg and that is combined city and highway. I burned regular in the 2004 and im also burning regular in the 2007. Since the 2007 has the newer VVti would it get better gas mileage burning premium? Since the cost difference between regular and premium is only 20 cents and gas is around $3.00 per gallon I would only need to pick up 1 mpg using premuim to break even and anything above that would be a plus. Also figure performance would be improved with premium? What have you guys found?

I can't speak for the V8, but the V6 VVTI engine runs fine on regular octane gas. Premium really gives no observable benefit, and I usually see the same mpg or slightly worse with premium vs regular.

Ok, so the first tank of gas was courtsey of the dealer, and I know they use 87. I was only getting 14 average. This 2nd fill up was out of my wallet & I put in 92. I just checked it tonight, I'm up to 19 with an average of 18.
I know people say it doesn't make a difference. And I understand that, but I see a difference. I may just use 89 in the future to help with the budget, but for now, unless I'm really broke, I'm not putting in 87. I'll stop using the more expensive gas when I don't see a change. I don't know if the previous owner was driving it like a granny, and it just needed a young'un to floor it once or twice (Ok I've floored more times than that), to blow the carbon out of it.

I consistently get 17-18 and every other week get 19. This is using 93 in an '06 Limited V8

Normal moderate footed:
91 Octane: 16-17 city 19 hwy (up to 75mph)... 22.5 following semis
Heavy footed:
91 octane: 14-16 city 17 hwy
remote starting the car all the time and waiting 13 minutes for it to get warm inside and driving heavy footed:
91 octane: 12-14 city
... but it's nice and warm when I get to it!!! <<<--- and that's what I used to get ALL the time out of my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8.

Yeah, so today I had to fill it up first time, all on me. $62!!! And that was the 89 @ $2.14 a gallon. I'm driving like Grandma, but oh I miss that thrill of taking off!
Driving like Grandma today for 40 miles, computer says average 16.3, and mpg 22.
I can handle that if it's correct.

I just bought my 08 4runner V8 limited. So far I love it, was very hesitant because I had a Camry XLE for like 6 months that I hated! So hopefully I won't start to hate the 4runner. Anyway I was kinda not loving the whole bad gas mileage thing but so far it seems like I'm getting more like 17 average, I've seen it get up to 23 on the highway. It is my first tank of gas so in past cars it usually gets better. My buddy sold me it and he said people have been saying they have been getting a lot more than the 14-17 they advertise. I'm like a 16 year old I've never had a truck like vehicle and now in the snow I actually enjoy driving where before it made me nervous sick. The only slight thing I dislike so far is this vibration on the driver side area when I hit a bump or bass in the music hits. Can't pinpoint what it is yet.
