gas nozzle clicks off while filling the tank

Hi,

did anyone experience this: when I fill the tank the gas nozzle keeps clicking off. I have to carefully adjust the flow manually, and it takes a long time to fill an empty tank. The fuel keeps producing foam which makes the nozzle stop. It happens on all gas stations, so it cannot be the calibration of the gas nozzle or the quality of the fuel.

Where to start checking: tank vent? Is there a difference between gas nozzles in the US and Europe? I got the US specs model but am in Europe.

This happens to me only at certain stations, maybe 30% of the time. I found that if I just hold the pump up slightly while pumping gas it works fine and clicks off when full. Just a minor inconvenience for me, but if there's a fix, i'd love to hear it.

Normally happens to me only when its real low & then it cuts off till I get a cpl gallons in .

Sounds like the charcoal canister vent valve is sticking and not letting air escape while the fueal is going in

Yeah, While Not Toy related, I had this happen to one of my Audis... PITA trying to fill up while doing it a dime's worth at a time :mad2:

It's been happening to me a lot more lately, but I have been letting it run real low before filling up like 6-9 miles left.

It's strange... The exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. It probably lasted 4-6 fill-ups. It was very frustrating to keep trying to fill the tank. I tried to move the nozzle in and out and slow down the flow, but nothing seemed to help. I just had to keep restarting the pump about a dozen times. Now everything's fine again all of a sudden for the last few fills. Hope it keeps up, and that yours will get better again like mine!

Any idea about fixes for this? The diagram of the T4R (attached) shows a 'fuel tank breather', nothing like 'charcoal vent'?

add the thread: now I know in which State in the US you are banned to pump your own gas by law and where the best prices and insurances are offered - but since I am in Europe this info is of no use for me!

No real fixes mentioned. Holding the nozzle in a different angle does not really help much.

I guess it has to do with what Toyota marked as the 'fuel tank breather' in their diagram. This part leads the air vented when filling the tank towards the nozzle mechanism to keep it open.

But before working on the fuel system I would like to be sure. Its a bit a sensitive area to work on! Has anyone experience in fixing this?

For some reason im having a brain fart and dont remember where the charcoal canister is but off the side of the canister there should be a 19mm hose that sometimes spiders will build a nest in the hose should just open to atmosphere with no restrictions as the tank only builds 0.5psi pressure

I have had the issue also. I was able to put a few gallons in by pulling the nozzle out a tad to allow more air into the tank. After I had $15 or so in I was able to push the nozzle farther in.

Only happens to me rarely. A quick hard rap of the end of the nozzle on the concrete always fixed it.

Concrete, Metal, and combustable liquid make me nervous

I have had the same issue at certian stations for the past 6 months. Always have to set it to the middle setting.

i usually rotate the handle to the right and never have an issue. If i let it go normal it would constantly click off every .04 of a gallon.
