Gas should be 5 dollars a gallon!

Well, I was watching the news and the media is all over this economy and how bad the stock market is doing.

Our gov't needs to make up ground on this situation and grab hold of the reigns. The last thing we need is for the power of the dollar to drop. Bread being 12 bucks a loaf is not going to be good. Mind you, if bread reaches 12 bucks, everything else will go up respectively as well.

So I propse a massive tax on gas. Think about it. We as Americans like it big and loud and badass, myself included. But we were brought up that way. What if we brought up our children with the mindset that it is ok to not have the biggest or best. What if we taught the next generations to be frugal. Not balls out frugal, but somewhere in the middle.

The tax on the gas would be for the deficit. Perhaps even to replenish the Social Security that has been "borrowed" from. Not to NASA, or campaign funds or vacations to Martha's Vinyard. Maybe to help secure our borders. Pay our teachers more, hire some more law enforcement (the most underappreciated occupations in this country). Maybe we could call it the All American tax.

Perhaps this would help fuel the search for alternative energy. We obviously need it. Oil is a limited commodity. If we tax the crap out of it, it would make it last longer. Americans would buy a lot more economically fuel efficient vehicles. Not to save the environment like a tree hugging fag, but just to make our cushy lifestyle last all that much longer. For our children.

2 dollar tax per gallon? I'd pay it. For my son's future.

We definately need to segregate the tax from the profits the oil companies make.

They are making billions with the low taxes now, if we increased the tax, they wouldn't make as much. Americans wouldn't buy as much if we were more efficient in our use of fuel.

Right. But what are you going to do? It is important that we remain the #1 customer of oil. We don't want China to become the number one consumers of oil.

Until cuts are made, taxes can be doubled, tripled or even quadrupled and we'll still have deficits. I've already paid my fair share.

Take 2 of your own dollars for every gallon of gas you buy, invest it, put it in the bank, a college fund or whatever for your kid. Once the politicians get a hold of your money it won't do you or your children much good.

I think you guys are missing my point. The goal isn't to line the pockets of politicians. Though that might happen, and get abused like every other program. I am just brain storming about how we pay for the deficit. I was presenting this scenario with the idea that the tax would be temporary and handled as intended only.

It's too bad we have to worry so much about politicians doing the wrong thing with tax money. Nonetheless, it happens in every gov't.

I wonder what the gas prices will be in 10 years. 11 Years ago it was .89 cents a gallon. In ten will it be 8 or 9 dollars a gallon? At what price do we start taking alternative means of power more seriously? Maybe I should convert my engine to propane.

I got a tdi to use whenever, but thats besides the point. i thought this was a free market economy with minimal government economy, unless im missing something, the government steals enough as it is, i bet if the money was managed better as it is we could have figured out how get out of this fuel mess. I make enough sacrifices, you can pay my extra $2 a gallon if you really want this new system, i prefer $4 a gallon instead of $6 a gallon.

Always remember.........No nation has ever taxed itself into prosperity.

We do have some issues with our tax code - and I would like very much to see it replaced with a true flat-rate income tax or a national sales tax of some type. However, our problem is on the SPENDING side of the equation.

Trying to solve deficits with tax hikes is even more futile than attempting to reduce violent crime by passing more bogus gun control laws. Raising taxes and giving more revenue to the government is useless, as it will be spent at an even higher rate and the deficit & debt will continue to grow.
