Gas tank swap

My gas tank is leaking on my 3rd gen from rust, and there's not 3rd gen gas tanks around and I foud a 2nd gen gas tank wondering if it would work just as well as a 3rd gen or if they are the same size? Couldn't find a there's on this type of swap so to the experts on here please give me some advice/help thanks!

Is the tank itself leaking or the filler neck? It's some what common for filler necks to rust out and start leaking.
