Hi guys,
I am new to the board and just bought a 2003 4Runner Limited leftover.

My question is what type of gas I should put in it?
Some people tell me to put a hi octane gas and others
say it doesn't matter. Gas prices are also getting higher by the day.

What is the best choice?

Welcome to the board. Use the search function -- this subject has been discussed at length.

Just use what the owner's manual says -- 87 octane or higher.

I put hi octane in mine. I have the V8. The book says you can go with the middle, but I find I get much better performance when I put in the highest gas. You can probably get away with putting cheaper gas in, but it all depends on what you feel the car runs best on. I would not put anything other than the highest in mine!

Man, I know what you are talking about with the gas prices. I live in Jersey too, and it gets more expensive by the week. The cheapest I pay now for the high is $1.65. Look at it on the brighter side, New York you pay over $2.00 a gallon for high octane! :yesyes:

if you have the $ to burn, then do the 91/92 octane. Else go w/ the mass who use 87

Now if you add a SC then you're forced to go with 91/92...

87oct since new in my 2003 V6 Limited

No problems at all since August '03. Manual states that "IF" you experience knocking you should switch to a higher octane rating, such as with towing or heavy loads.

I highly suggest that you use both and see if you notice any difference at all.

I use 87 in my V8, no problem whatsoever my manual says nothin about knocking maybe I missed it but it does say for increase performance use premium, I tried premium and the truck only drinks more

How Much Extra HP?

Just how much extra H.P. are you getting when using high octane fuel.....or, to put in another way... how much are you losing by not using it?

I'm assuming that the V6 245 HP rating would require using 92 octane fuel, especially as the compression is a bit higher than the V8.

Here in Michigan I am paying about $1.70 for 87 octane, so be happy.

That does have to hurt. It is really hurting Metro Detroit because the economy has been horrific for so long.

Last night, I paid 87 cents per litre for 89 octane, which translates to $3.95 Canadian for an imperial gallon (160 oz.). Not sure how that translates into US currency for US gallons, but I suspect we are paying more north of the 49th parallel

Don't know what an imperial gallon is. There are 3.84 liters to whatever type of gallon we use in the US. According to the bank of Canada, todays currency conversion rate is $1.00 CAN = $ 0.746 US.

So, to convert your price to US values:

$0.87 CAN/liter X 3.84 liter/gallon = $3.34 CAN/gallon

$3.34 CAN/gallon X $0.746 US/$1.00 CAN = $2.49 US/gallon

Perhaps about 10% more than what I would pay for 89 octane here in LA.

I've been useing COSTCO gas since 2002 when i bought the truck, no problem so far.

Been using 87 octane in my 04 V8 with zero problems, no pinging or anything. In fact you cannot tell the difference.
