Gater Supply Co - Spare Tire Carrier

Hi ALL,

Has anyone ever heard of this company? or have this product? or know someone with this product? I came across it on Instagram and want to see if anyone can provide any pros/cons or feedback.

I emailed them and was told they are $450 ("wired and powder coated") + shipping. They are located in Wichita, KS and lead time is about 2 weeks.

no, but if its anything like those cooler carriers you can get, that tire will flop around like a pair of 90 year old jugs. Unless it comes with a sleeve to make it tight in the receiver. Hard to explain, but put a hitch in your receiver and you'll notice there is play in there. With the weight of the tire on there I bet it will knock side to side.

Yea, the movement and noise have always been a concern of mine. I really want to get a rear tire mount (swing or whatever) because I don't want to mount a 35 inch spare on my roof (even though I have that accessory on my Baja Rack) due to it compromising the center of gravity and increasing the probability of the vehicle roll.

With that said, there are a few methods:

Basically, I want to mount my spare and am looking for options. All of the companies who make the hitch mounted tire carriers swear they don't make noise or knock around, but it just seems hard to believe. When I saw this new Gater one, I wanted to see if anyone had one or any experience with it.

"rattletrap" is the word that comes to mind..

Unless they specifically highlight how the mechanical interfaces can be tightened, or if they use hardware/latches/clamps that pre-load the joints, I have a hard time believing they wont move around and make noise.

I saw that on IG, as well, and had the same question about stability. I'd like to see more details about the carrier. I've been looking at various bumper/tire carrier options and the design of the stock bumper seems to lend itself to adding a lot of extra weight with a plate bumper and swing out due to the way the bumper wraps. I'd like to see some options that are more of hybrid between a full plate bumper and a carrier flopping around in the hitch, even if it requires cutting the stock bumper.

FWIW, my Yakima hitch-mounted bike carrier is pretty beefy and has the same pin/hinge arrangement so it can pivot down to allow opening the tailgate. It uses a threaded hitch pin that tightens into a bolt inside the carrier so it's snug. No rattle whatsoever and Yakima also sells a lock that fits onto the end of the threaded pin. Good solution for anything hitch-mounted accessory you don't want rattling around.

This is similar to what I'm talking about.

I installed a hitch ball and noticed this 'rattle can noise" you guys are referring to. Took it out and used gorilla tape around the sliding part to make it thicker and not bounce around and now it is silent. You can apply that to the tire carrier and be done with it.

it looks like the holes are threaded to use a bolt to snug it up against the walls of the receiver. i have a bike rack that mounts like this and it doesn't wiggle in the slightest.
