Gates water pump failure after 3,000 miles

Installed this Gates water pump # 43538 from rock auto exactly a month ago. 3,028 miles later (road trip down to Lake Tahoe and back) I noticed some dried coolant on the bottom of the engine. After pulling the fan, shroud, and pulley back off, this is what I found.
I'm not even going to risk getting another one from them under warranty because from what I read, the Gates pumps fail far too often. At least it held up for the road trip unlike the Gates radiator cap I bought. Had to replace that on day two. Nothing but oem from here on out, the new pump hopefully will be here by this weekend.

That's a bummer. A lot of work to remove and replace that thing. I would replace it with OEM. Is it a V6?
 
Things like timing belt or water pump should be replace with OEM parts. You save some money but now your mechanic will charge you more ;)

Bull...you work for a dealer.

#1 Toyota has had some problems with their water pumps. Many needing to replace the pump while still under warranty. Many good pump manufacturers are building more reliable pumps then Toyota's OEM pumps.

#2 I've never seen or heard of anyone having a problem with Gates (or other high quality brands) timing belts. Toyota doesn't make timing belts, or water pumps.
 
i had installed a gates wp (#43528) and it was bad upon install. There was a bad bearing or something. It would make a "whirring" sound when you spun it by hand. I sent it right back and replaced it with an Aisin one.
 
Sorry but 90% percent of aftermarket stuff is made in China.

Places like Advance auto and Pep-Boys carry the cheapest parts possible....That's why I don't buy from them. Place I buy parts from has a wide selection of pumps made in the US and Japan. More expensive then Advance auto...but still much cheaper then the Dealer.

-Yes, its a V6. The oem pump is on the way, just hope it gets here in time for the weekend.

-Good thing I am my own mechanic, I come from a long line of machinists so its practically blasphemy to let someone else not in the family to touch your car.

What is funny is that usually after the first water pump replacement, they don't leak again usually. Not sure why, but we've have a couple people get water pumps at 30k and at nearly 100k+ they're dry.

Gates isn't a bad company from what I hear, so I'm a bit surprised to hear they have common problems with their pumps.
