Gauge Cluster

I also wondered this... Asked a while ago with little response. I did do a search for one off a wrecked TE or LE with no luck. If I could get one under 500$, I'd like to give it a shot

The difference is SR5 doesn't have Optitron, which is sweet

what's the diff between them?

Pretty sure it was asked before and Harper or someone mentioned the wiring harnesses between the clusters are different. Could be mistaken, but that's what I recall.

I hate to say it but we do needs more wrecked 5th Gens for parts. I know I know - a horrible thing to say.

As for the cluster I just saw pics of the difference and now understand the desire to change.

I dont think the wiring harness is any different, from the initial research that I did. I tried to order one from Toyota and they wont do it because they need a VIN # to order the part and since I have a SR5 it only allows them to order the gauge cluster for the SR5 not the Optitron that is in the Trail and LTD. Since the gauge cluster also has the odometer in it, Toyota has to send out the new cluster with the correct mileage. So service has to pull the original gauge cluster and tell Toyota how many miles are on the car. Then the car has to sit, cannot be driven, until the new gauge cluster is put in so the mileage is the same and not altered.

If I could get them to order it, then there is no way I could return it if it did not work since it would then have my mileage already programed in it.

I am trying to find one from a junk yard, and try to just plug it in and make sure that it works. If it does, then that cluster can be sent out to someone to program the correct mileage before I permanently installed in my truck.

If any of you guys have a friend with Optitron try to plug it into your SR5 and see if it works. It will either fire right up and be fine, or it wont work at all. The gauge cluster is super easy to take out and swap for a couple minutes to test it out. You just have to pull the black trim bezel around the gauges and then remove it with 4 screws

exactly this.
harnesses looked the same when I looked at them.

The harness is the same for all 3 models (look at the EWD). The difference is a few wires within the harness. I'd have to spend more time between the EWD and FSM to decipher the wiring more.

Ummm here's a question.... So many people do the mods to be like the Trail, why didn't you just get a Trail... Unless you wanted leather and full time 4WD. Or wanted to spend 40+ and rip it apart.

I was torn between the LE and Trail but there was so much more with the Trail.. I don't need the full time 4WD and I don't like leather all that much.

This is not a jab at anyone by any means. Just wondering. Love all the mods you guys do, which is making me make mine a little better

No offense taken, not a bad question to ask.

In Canada the TE is 7K more than the SR5, and for me its wasn't worth it. The only options i liked were 1.rear locker 2.kdss 3.optitron.

I knew I would end up lifting anyways, and was satisfied that lifting would accomplish my goals for suspension performance, so kdss wasn't as big of a factor. Outside of that for 7K, the other options just weren't enough for me. I could put some sweet air lockers on my SR5 for a lot less than that :) The only other option that i really like off the TE is the higher trim, but in canada the SR5 is trimmed like a TE so that takes care of that. There were some annoying things about the TE as well, I'm not crazy about the slide out tray, and dont like terrain select, so those things kind of turned me off. Also the SR5 gave me a 3rd row and leather option which, with kids, is great (as others have said sold it to the wife).

a few have bought LE's and turned them into TE's mostly for the full time 4 wheel drive I assume

I see your point. I guess I was looking the other way, as in LE to Trail. I guess that's what is great about this world is that you can do whatever you want!!!

Yeah, like mentioned above I just wanted a locker and optitron. ARB takes care of the locker problem and a gauge swap will take care of optitron. I will figure it out eventually, just has not been the highest on my list of things to accomplish until now.

With the 7K you save between an SR5 and the Trail there is a lot of things that can be done. For around 9k you can have a SR5 with a full blown long travel set up (Camburg or Total Chaos) in the front with 2.5" coilovers and 2.5" 3 tube bypasses, along with a ARB air locker in the rear. This setup would absolutely blow the doors off a Trail in every department there is, street, rocks, high speed, you name it.

The Trail is an excellent platform for people that do not want to go all crazy modifying the truck and have something that is very capable from the factory. If you plans involve anything else, I say save your coin out the door at the dealership and invest in all the aftermarket goodies you can afford.

You also forget that real trucks are built, not bought!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I would love to know what you come up with. Its so nice having a wiring genius on the forum :)

Kudos, you have helped people out on this forum so much already with the all the ESM work you did. Much appreciated!

The real question would be, "should I (you) spend $700 to swap out a gauge cluster?" Good luck finding a junkyard TE or LTD.

Trail does not come with 3rd row.... Sucks when you have kids...

I looked into sending a kid to grandma's house for a few years, but settled for an 2013 SR5.....but don't worry, not I have a 2010 TE also, so the world is now 7 min from midnight.
