Gauge or Sending Unit ?

Changed oil in my 2006 V6 today . Have not driven it for several days . When I backed it off the ramps , I noticed the gauge was on empty and the yellow light was lit . Didn't seem right but I carefully made it to the gas station , which fortunately is only two miles away .
Filled it up and it only took 14 gallons and when full , registered just a bit over 3/4 on the gauge . In the last few months , I thought it was off by a few gallons
but nothing that got my attention like today . Hope it's nothing major as I'm pushing 241K miles and my wife keeps bugging me to dump it . Also time for my 4th set of tires but I still prefer it over anything else . Anyone have similar issue ?

Sending units can go bad over time. Especially on a high mileage vehicle. You can just get the sending unit, but if it was me, I'd personally change out the entire assembly unit and it'll come with everything. New wiring, pump, sock, and sending unit.

It probably is, however, I'd only want to drop the fuel tank once.

Have to agree with [MENTION=84194]ChaosStarter[/MENTION] on this one. It's expensive to replace everything in there, but if you're going to go through the trouble of dropping the tank on a 214k 4Runner to partially take apart the assembly to replace the fuel gauge sender, throwing a new pump with filter and new wiring wouldn't be a bad idea for peace of mind. Last thing you want is to do all that and then have the gods decide the pump has had it 10k later and have to do all that work over again.

Part Number for the Fuel Gauge Sender (You'll have to take the fuel pump assembly out and carefully pop the old on off and unplug it):

83320-60440 (About $50-ish from what I saw)

Part Number for the Entire Fuel Pump Assembly (The whole shebang ready to drop in and plug in with everything new):

77020-35111 (It's about $500 from most of the websites I'm seeing)
