I have recently added a 3 inch lift and 33 inch tires to my 1997 4runner SR5 V6 and its slow, it was slow to begin with but very slow now. I dont know much about the gears but ive heard i should run 4.88 gears or 5.29? gears. I dont know where the best place would be to get them or if i need those types of gears and id like to see mods that make the 4runner gain hp or run better.

I am running 4.88's on my 99 v-6 auto. It is in no stretch of the imagination sporty, but it is as good if not a little better than stock. 4.56 would have put me at the stock final drive ratio, so 4.88's put the final drive ratio a little bit lower. This is a good thing because it makes up for the extra weight of my bumpers and so forth. If you plan to use your rig as a DD i would not suggest the 5.29's. They will make highway driving a bit harder on the rig. Right now when i am cruising at 70 mph i am at about 2500 rpm which i feel is a good sustainable rpm. Much higher and I wouldn't want to hold it continuously. Oh and i just drove to NOLA and back and averaged right about 19 mpg so that makes me happy too.
 
99, what size tires are you running? Are accounting for the fact that your speedo ( and odometer) are registering more than you're actually going?

Thanks, i am fersure getting the 4.88 gears. Where did you purchase yours? and how much did it run to do it all said and done?
 
I got both of the differentials pre-built from East Coast Gear Supply. I also had them throw an ARB locker in each so iirc it was about 1500 said and done. then a full day of wrenching to swap them out. I went this route because it was the easiest since i didn't have to mess with the gears myself, and the quickest since my runner is my only ride.

Really? I would've figured that to be a lot more. Not bad at all.
 
I apologize, my memory was a little off. With the lockers and everything it was about 1500 each, so 3grand for both front and rear. Though more than half of that price was the lockers.

Dogs are awesome, and no matter how much you spend on mods for the runner they never complain.
I am not sure what breed she is, i found her on a dead end road. So i just call her a Georgia Mutt.

I have. More importantly, I am desperately trying to find someone to adopt this absolutely gorgeous dog. I've worked with probably over 100 adoptable dogs, this one is my favorite. Why wouldn't you want to hold those rpms that high for very long? I drove from Tampa to Atlanta running around 80mph which was around 26-2700 rpm and I got right around 21 MPG.
 
Just a personal preference. I tend to get some high frequency vibrations if I hold too much over that for very long.

Depending on terrain...

If you're downshifting because the truck can't hold 2k well, I would rather cruise at 2500 and not downshift...

But then again, the top end of the 4spd is so tall, it downshifts all the time anyways.
