Gear Shifter Light?

I recently bought a used '04 SR5 and I'm still getting used to the controls & features. On my first night drive, I noticed that the gear shifter is totally dark. I'm thinking that the gear positions should be lighted...if so, where is the fuse or bulb?

Yes, they normally light up. There is a small lamp under roughly where "L" is. I tried like crazy to find a picture. I remember seeing it in one of the LED lighting threads. Though your local toyota dealer can sell you a new one.

Also, there is another one in the cup holders too.. (Though l bought mine used and mine was burned out when I got it and have yet to replace it). Might be worth doing both. Getting into the center console is very easy. There should be a few threads on here that explain how to do it.

99% of my search finds so far is specific to the dash lights under the HVAC controls.

Any trick to removing this? I guess a flat head screwdriver to pry with is the norm for these things?

Also, is the bulb something that radio shack would have a compatible one for?

No screws. Just open the center console and grab either side of the tray in front of it and yank it up. You have to pop a few more pieces out but they are all just held in with tabs and come out fairly easy. You can disconnect the harness under the DAC button to get the whole main piece out of the way. I also had to unscrew the shifter knob to get the whole piece out

Also you may want to change out the cupholder lights while you have it apart (same bulb). The glove box light is a 74 as well. Few more pieces come out to get back to it but it's not too bad. I did my shifter in white and my cupholders in blue to match my gauges. The pic has a blue bulb that I tried 1st but it wasn't bright enough

like everyone else said you just need to change a bulb. however, you could always wire in a little 4" led strip, the strip fits perfect in a groove under the numbers

Thanks for the info. I called the dealer before I read this...they said that these are the part numbers for the gear shift light and "cap" (cover):
Bulb: 90981-11014
Cap: 90339-04074

just 1 74LED in the middle lights up both cupholder lights.

you would need 3 total to do that, all 74's

I now have a LED strip for the shifter lights. Much brighter and a short strip doesn't cost much more than a bulb

Order 4 of the 74 leds, one for gear selector, one for cup holder, and then one for the glove box, the extraone should be a spare in case one dont work.

I have a question that goes along with this issue as well. Mine is a little different and I need some help figuring out what might be wrong.

My issue: When I get the vehicle and start it I notice the light is completely out and does not work on the gear shifter but if I move the gear shifter right and left while in park the light comes back on. When the light comes back on I shift into drive but sometimes the light will go out and sometimes it will stay on when I shift into drive. If while in drive I notice the light did not stay on between switching from park to drive then I will shift into 3rd or neutral and the light will comeback on.

Sounds like the bulb works on mine but I cannot figure out what it does this during shifting.

Lyric - mine was doing the same thing. If I bump the center console it'll come back on sometimes. You need a new bulb.

WHITE 5K INTERIOR LED STRIP LIGHTS - Interior - Strip Lights

I order both Green and White to check out the different look. Went with 5K white because i lost the color of the "R" and "N" when Green was installed. But i still may go back and swap it back out. It was easy with the Strip I got from V-LEDs becasue I ordered it with a 74 base apadter on it so it was just plug and play after I cut the strip down to fit. Cut 3 LED off and it is bright and looks great. But for $3.78 plus shipping it was the way to go. After the install of the strip. I carved out a place for the extra wires to go so the weren't be pressed on or cut by puttin gthe console back together. Just a little utility knife and cut a bit of plastic to make room for wire. DONE.

I too talked to many people in the forums before I start my LED swap. But now it is looking great. Some great people in here with great advice. Next I'm do my switches on dash.

Would like to do this. Did you go with the 9LED strip and then cut 3 off of that? I don't want to get something thats going to be distracting at night. I guess you could just cut an additional light off to make it dimmer if needed.

Works perfectly with no modifications, and fills up the whole shifter light area

I put the same bulb in my cup holder and ash tray as well, also put a white one of these in my glovebox

the blue 74 led i had from superbright was not anywhere near as bright as yours! That was the main reason i went to the strip. But now, i want to change my white strip to blue since i did my cupholders in blue

Yeah, it looks like you had the single upward facing LED, the multi-direction bulb is key, I learned that the hard way on my other car
