VVTI 2UZ timing belt mistake

Prefacing this by acknowledging that what I originally did was not smart but trying to remedy the situation. On to the issue

During a timing belt install yesterday (2uz fe VVTI) when rotating the crank shaft after installing the belt I noticed one of the timing marks was not lining up the way I thought it should. I ended up taking the belt off and manually rotating the cam gear that was off. Unfortunately the cam jumped during this procedure. I was able to get all timing makes lined back up to the T marks as mentioned in several guides and the crank at the nipple position of TDC. After reassembly and start I ended up getting P0011 and P0021 codes.

From research and the wonders of modern AI it seems like when I rotated the cam when unconnected I might have preloaded the VVTI cam gear which is causing the over advanced timing.

Right now my plan of action according to what I’ve seen is to try and rotate by hand the VVTI gears to essentially lock the VVTI gear back into neutral and insert a pin into the gear to hold it there while I get the timing marks back into place.

Unfortunately I cannot find and information on this anywhere I’m simply relying on AI to help guide me so I’m wondering if this what I should be trying to clear these codes? Any help would be appreciated!

Please show me a pic of your timing marks lining up to the T mark, and also cite your reference to "lining up to the T marks". I think you might be using the wrong mark but wanted to see your references first. I attached a non VVTI timing mark for my '03, not sure what a VVTI looks like. It does sound like the VVTI cam gear thing is a complex animal.

Thanks.
