Gearing question

I have an automatic with 5.29's and have run it with 35's and 33's.

The speedo is only slightly off with 33's and power is good.

An indicated 55 mph is really 52mph.

I have a 95 V6 AUTO and I installed 5:29 gearing in the back and was going to put in the front. 15x12 alcoas wrapped with 33x12.5 wrangler MT.

I need this truck to be a daily driver and with Hawaii's increasing gas prices..($4.30 87)..I was thinking to put 4:56 gearing?

what you guys think?

Like KidV said, your gearing is merely getting you back close to stock, given your tire size (4.88 w/ manual, 5.29 for auto). 4.56's will drop you below the optimum rpm's with 33's, and will affect the truck's acceleration and highway cruising power. Dropping to a lower gear ratio to gain fuel mileage is best done in vehicles with engines with plenty of low-end torque--doing so in your truck will most likely HURT your mileage, because the engine will be struggling more, and therefore wasting fuel. I wouldn't go lower than 4.88's in your case. And whatever you do, make sure the front and rear ratios are the SAME before you shift into 4WD, or expensive parts will go "boom"!

I have stock 4:88 G144 on the vin tag

would it be better cause I dont really like how the RPM's scream going up the mountain..at 55 mph or 60 it feel like it struggles for some reason?

any idea?

Again, a higher gear ratio equals more torque at the expense of higher RPMs at a given speed. If you go to a lower gear ratio, you will have less torque. Torque is what you use to accelerate and climb hills. Consider that the engine you have is already gutless, and then consider the effect of even less torque than stock.

ill jus swap out the third member with the 488 and see if i like it or not...if not put the 529 back on.

What are you runnig? MAnual? tires?

I've got an auto with 31s and stock 4.30 diffs, and I'm slightly undergeared - I accelerate slowly, bog badly on hills or in headwinds, and I get around 18 mpg mixed.

Geesh, I get 18-20 on 36's with a worn out carbed 4 cyl.
