RedSled's right. tight. I'm 5'7" on a low gravity day, and my feet like to flop when I sleep. I'm unreasonably cramped when I lie down with the back hatch closed and the bottoms of the back seats raised. For comfort, I'd have to remove the bottom of the back seats or let my feet hang out the back of the truck where the mountain lions could nibble on them.
Some measurements from a 2002 Limited T4R:
1) about 78 inches. passenger seat bottom and back rest moved all the way forward. measured from inside of closed rear hatch to map pocket of passenger seat. This is the "remove the rear seat bottoms" config for sleeping with the back hatch shut. It's an easy thing to do.
2) about 67 inches. measured from inside of closed rear hatch to the vertical wall made by the bottom of the back seat when you lift it up, then lower the back of the seat forward to make a flat surface. This is the "hang your feet out the back" config for sleeping.
3) about 40.5 inches. measured between the rear wheel wells. in case you're wearing your football shoulder pads to bed.
4) about 37.5 inches. measured from the middle of the cargo area floor to the ceiling. sitting headroom. bonus!

I wonder if I'd be better off with a Land Cruiser or a pickup with canopy for my intended purposes? I'm unaware of the interior length of the TLC, but used to camp inside an 84 Toyota pickup, for close to 14 years. So I know that would work.

:sleepy:Wow, those are good specs to to know. Even with the best case scenario I'd barely fit in the rig to sleep. At 74" tall, and a maximimum available space of 78" I'd be kinda smashed in there. As long as I'm alone I could deal with the width, but that 37.5" ceiling hieght is a little concerning too. When sittin flat in my rear on a hard floor, I think I'm 37" high/tall. Throw in a sleeping bag and a sleeping pad (backpacker's sleeping gear), that a head banger! Yikes!
my chica and i used to camp in the back of a 2K 4WD short-cab Tacoma with a topper (canopy?) on it. spacious. comfy. no idea what the bed length was. awesome little truck.
we'll be camping in the back of the T4R come fall, if we're too lazy to put up the tent. i'll pull the rear seat bottoms for that. it'll be fine for us shorties.

I camped in the canopy of my former Toyota pickup. It was a regular cab and box. The box I believe was about exactly 6 feet long, so I'd lay at a slight angle to get the extra few inches. It worked for years, but I'm not as young and nimble as I once was either.
I can always just bring the backpack tent for my camping needs. It literally takes a few minutes to setup or take down.

I am 6'5'' and when i take my seat bottoms off, it is not bad at all. I have even slept with my girlfriend (thank god she is not 6'5'') it was tight but I still slept fine. Some people like to make sleeping platforms that raise it up a couple inches and allow for more room between the wheel wells. The height is really not a problem from floor to ceiling when you are only sleeping

If you are taller than 6 ft definitely recommend removing the bottom rear seats, especially if you will be in the car for a while, it also gives you more storage space as well as more sleeping room. I think its 2 bolts per cushion?

I am 6'3" and slept in the back of my 4runner a few times last year. You definitely have to take the rear seat bottoms out to gain more room, and you will probably have to sleep at a slight angle.
I found the most comfortable setup was an air mattress. Either a twin, or a partially inflated queen. Since the rear seats slope when folded down, just a mat makes for some angled sleeping. The air mattress doesn't have this.
I've since build an enclosed trailer into a toy hauler and sleeping quarters haha. But I would sleep in the back again if I had no other option.

Thanks!!! Not that I couldn't measure myself after work... but you saved me a bunch of time and can start planning a "camping" trip now instead of later tonight. wifey would prefer to stay in the truck than in a tent.
