Gen 4 brake issues

I've been getting progressively worse brake throbbing for the past few thousand miles. I pulled the rotors on the front today and they're being turned right now. The pads have a lot of wear left on them. Greater than 50% I'd say. I'm thinking hard about just cleaning things up, lubing the slide pins, and putting the old pads on. Thoughts?

I'll be selling the vehicle this year and am not in the state of mind to be buying Brembos and hot shot pads.


With the fronts having so much wear left, I'm thinking about not even looking at the rear's. Until I remembered doing a vehicle previously that had the rears wear out before the fronts.

You didn't say how many miles. If pads are worn evenly (and you are reselling soon) I'd just reuse pads. If one pad is worn more than others than you have binding on one of the calipers (or the pins) --- that could also caus rotor to warp. Easy to look at rear pads when you rotate the tires. Suspect they are still good.

Update:

52kmiles on vehicle.

Got a call from the parts store saying they didn't have the proper adapter to handle the wide-hub wheels on the 4runner. All that work and I had to put the unturned rotors back on. Needless to say, things still throb.

When I have another day to mess w/it I'll call a place first to make sure then can turn the rotors.

Just put some new pads and rotors on the truck. Turning the rotors and re using the pads is just a quick fix to your problem. With new pads and rotors you be good for another 50K.

Going to the trouble to remove the pads and rotors and then reuse them seems like a waste of time to me. Your just going to have to do it again real soon. Spend some money. Do it right and your be rewarded in the long run.

you could read his situation and agree that resurfacing the rotors will remove this problem and that 1/2 pad life will certainly last the YEAR he said he wants to get.

Then again you could have a stuck piston on 1 of the 4 pistons. This will create a wedge shaped wear pattern on one of the pads. It is somewhat common on early 4th gen runners.

Of course a very hard stop, on the brakes can create a glazing from the pad to the rotor which turning them may solve this?
