Gentlemen, questions about the FJ coil mod

So I've read about it, and I'm interested in it because I have the xreas but I'm interested in a bit of a stiffer feel with a slight lift.

My question really is about manufacturers. Since the FJ is discontinued, I haven't had a ton of luck on forums or Craigslist with the springs. So I looked around and found Moog replacements for ~$50, OE Toyota replacements for ~$80 if I remember correctly, then there's the ProComp ones for $154 (rear) and $168 (front). Those particular springs say they are for a "1 inch to 6 inch lift" . In fact I'll quote the first sentence of the product description:

"Need a lift? Get a set of Pro Comp’s premium grade lifted coil springs for anywhere from one to six inches of lift – because some like it mild and some like it wild."

So my question regarding the pro comps revolve around the lift. It says 1-6" but if I use those is it just going to jack the truck sky high or can I use it to just gain that 1" like stock fj coils? I really am not ready for a big lift yet, just wanted a slight increase and a more truck feeling ride since I'm switching to LT265/70/17s soon.

The ProComp coils have 10 wraps whereas the stock fj has 8, up front at least. has 7 in the rear unlike the stock 6.

Shocks. Do you get shocks designed for the FJ, or shocks for the 4Runner? Is billstein the best way to go or are there other options out there that are as good or better? Do you get style 1 or 2?

I know the FJ coil conversion is all over this site, but usually it's about getting used coils and I'm honestly just confused about the shocks in general. So I'm not trying to repost, I just want to do this right when I do it. My xreas has 143,000 miles so I'm preparing now.

Seems like most who didn't use OEM FJ coils have used Moog. Idk which Moog or if there are variations.

If you're wanting just 1" of lift in the front, the Bilstein 5100 adjustable can be set to 0.85" (next higher setting is 1.75"). From what I understand, the FJ or Moog coils can add a little bit to that.

The 5100s for this platform Toyota fit 4th gen 4Runner and FJ Cruiser. The rear 5100 is not adjustable.

I'm in the same boat. I have been planning an FJ spring swap (for the rear) in my 4Runner for a little while now. I found a brand new take-off front suspension from a TRD Tacoma, so I'm good in the front--I just wanted some low mileage FJ springs for the rear. They have proven very elusive.

After chasing Craigslist adds, and always being 5th in line for some FJ take-offs on the Cruiser forums, I decided to just buy some new OEM Toyota springs. After shipping and all of the hassles involved with getting used springs, I decided it just wasn't worth it. I found a number of Toyota parts dealerships that have the 4x4 FJ coils listed for around $80 per spring. The Moog springs are much cheaper, but I have heard that they are not of the same quality as OEM, and they don't fit the rear of the 4Runner without some grinding. I found ACDelco 'professional' springs for a bit cheaper than factory Toyota, but I can't find any feedback as to their quality. So OEM it is.

I dont know if this will help, but someone on here just recently posted w/pic stating they used, and cant exactly remember but used the rear springs out a trd tacoma 4x4, or Moog's 4x4 FJ's springs maybe even a lexus model vehicle giving them 1.5" lift with that stock ride and was very happy.
I dunno, but it definitely caught my attention as a first of something new I hadnt heard of before.

I doubt it was the Tacoma since they use leafs in the rear. Be a lot of work to add rear leafs to the 4Runner.

The Tacoma fronts are popular, I don't remember if they are higher or lower rates than front FJ though.

My dad has a 97 with the notorious sag, and I feel like he's told me that Moog wasn't very popular due to quality issue mentioned on here, though I can't specifically remember.

Since OEM is the next step up, I think I'll go that route because it saves a good chunk of money vs the next option which is pro comp.

Which leaves the question should I go with the adjustable front shocks, or just the normal ones... I bet they are a pretty penny, since I haven't found a price on them.

By the way thanks for clearing up the question about the shocks. I had an inclination they might be the same for the 4 and the FJ but not being 100% sure I didn't want to guess and guess wrong.

Paisano I see in your signature you have a V8 with spacers. Is this something necessary or just a nice touch? I'm sorry if that is a stupid question. Like I mentioned I've never really done a lift. Well I've never done a suspension mod really. I've replaced shocks and struts but that's the extent of my suspension work.

purchase these from vendors on this site, amazon,ebay etc
i just bought a set last week from Downsouth Motorsports thru ebay for $195 out the door and shipped free arrived in 2 days and they threw some in there for me. Highly recommended from others for a place to purchase Bilsteins.


Rear Bilstein 5100 non-adjustable model # 33-187174 x2
Price Range $70 - $100

Purchase from same as above

With the 2 new rear Bilstein shocks just go ahead and keep your stock springs and add a 1.5" spacers to the tops of them and with your 2 new 5100 adjustables put them on the second setting/perch 1.75" and either run your stock front coils, trd tacoma front coils, or some FJ front coils 2wd/4wd models 4wd usually preferred but with the new adjustables who cares.
And with all this you will obtain your goal and be level...
for about $400-$500 bucks
So either save your chips or pull out the plastic and get it done already
no need to keep searching/reading more and confusing yourself anymore than you have.

And there your done driving around in your 4runner feeling fresh and riding as smooth as a 64' 2 door coupe deville without feeling any dips or bumps in the road.

No moogs,acdelco,ebay knock off doo doo springs or coils.
If its not toyota springs/coils stick with the regulars ome,toytec etc

Regarding the coils, since I am ordering OEM most likely, would there be a difference or benefit in going with the trail teams coils? Or should I go for the base 4x4?

I have 1.5" spacers in the rear like Oneluv13T4R mentioned, but I have the front shocks set at 2.5", and FJ coils on each corner. The V8 weighs more in the front than the V6. Oneluv mentioned setting front at 1.75" - that wouldn't have gotten me level with the spacers in the rear.

Ripping out XREAS is easy - have to replace all 4 shocks if you take it out.

Sounds like you are pretty much decided on OEM springs, but I thought I'd throw out one more option since I see you have a V6 - the Moog 4Runner V8 springs. You can see from this thread that the Moog V8 fronts are longer than the OEM fronts by ~.6" but with only a mild increase in spring stiffness, whereas the Moog FJ fronts are only a little longer (.16") but much stiffer and will lift a lot more.

The advantage to longer springs is that you get more lift with less preload, which won't increase the ride stiffness as much. And the savings of $50/pair vs $80/spring was nice too.
