Geolandar A/T-S or Cooper Discoverer ATR

Looking for opinions from people who actually have these tires, or previously had them. I have narrowed my choices down to these two in the 255/70-17. My T4R is 85% on road, 15% logging roads. BUT, I live in Erie, PA where snow can total over 180 inches per year, and road conditions are basically terrible from Late November to late March, so snow performance is highly valued.

If I were lucky enough to have that much snow and nasty road conditions, I would run the goodyear duratrac, bfg at's, or some nokians. I just replaced a set of yoko ats. The most snow I had the yoko's in was about 4" last year. The traction was good on snowy and icy roads. They were ok in mud. Nothing crazy though. Smooth and quiet on the hi-way. The sidewalls seemed really thin, but I never had a puncture happen. They had about 33k miles on them when I replaced them. Still had over half the tread left but I lifted the 4runner and wanted something a little taller. Can't say on the coopers. I run Hankook dynapro RF10's now.
 
thanks for the reply. If the 4Runner were my daily driver I also would go with something little more aggressive, But, as much as I hate to say it, the wife hauls the two girls around in it. We take several trips to Rochester NY every year so I need something that still performs well on the highway. Right now Im leaning towards the Cooper's unless someone chimes in with something to change my mind.

Very paranoid in snow. I highly recommend the vatiivas or wr for your year
Round application.
 
Pulled the trigger on the Discoverer ATR today, install is tomorrow. Size 255/70-17. I did like the Nokian but they were much more expensive. Hoping to see dramatic changes in the ride quality with these vs. the crap dunlops.

Wow awesome, someone with the 255/70/17 combo. Really looking forward to pics and news on MPG. Please post some good pics ;-). Hope to hear good news on mpg with a skinner slighlty taller tire. Thank BowHunter. I may do the exact same.
 
AARRGGHH!! Tires didnt arrive today due to "weather", will need to reschedule for later this week. Will post pics when they are on.
 
I had the Cooper ATR on my Hilux years ago. They were very slippy on wet blacktop and you had to drive very, very careful on snowy streets.
Changed to Goodyear AT/R after that and they were very good in all cases compared to the Cooper ATR. But I don't know how they will work on a 4Runner. (other weight distribution..??)
Maybe the quality and fabrication-technique have changed since I drove the Cooper ATR (for example 2 years ago I bought the Cooper STT for my Land Cruiser and I am so pleased with this tire). Maybe nowadays the Cooper ATR isn't comparable to the Cooper ATR that I drove 10 years ago...

I am hoping they have improved their product from 10 years ago. Tires are on, too dark to take pics. I had my dad pick it up from the shop so I havent even driven it yet.......... I may sneak out after the kids are in bed for a short test drive. Pics to come, maybe Saturday when I wash it.

BTW, I went with RWL IN. My 03 sport is silver with the grey cladding. After looking at a ton of pics here I decided to I like the that look better.
 
got some crappy pics on the Blackberry. I am hoping to get to my dads house to wash it in the garage. The look is only slightly different, for the better. The ride is great and they are very quiet. I still think my truck should corner with less body roll with the X-Reas. Maybe its going bad? I have 82K on the truck. It seems to lumber through corners, especially at slow speeds.

Pics to come, I promise. I will update MPG when I can, the truck was half full when the tires were installed, so I will wait for the fill up to check the mileage.
 
Gas mileage update, in one word.............Pathetic. If your looking at this tire and size combination dont expect any "increase" in mpg. In fact, expect a DECREASE. I just returned from a trip to Rochester NY on I90. MPG went from 18.5 - 20 HWY, to 15 !!!!!!! Keep in mind this is in comparison to the factory dunlops.

they are nice and quite, and track well, but wow what a slap in the face. It may be time to send the T4R down the road, I wont be able to afford many family trips this summer at this rate. Maybe its time anyway, its a 2003 with 83K and the wife uses it as a mall crawler. I dont need the V8. There are more road friendly options out there.

Sorry for the rant, just very disappointed.
 
Correct, 255/70-17 Discoverer ATR. They look great, havent had a chance to try them in the snow yet. I like everything about them so far, except for MPG.
 
Hate to hear your dissapointed. I wish this wasn't a swap from dunflops for you. The weight increase alone is quit a bit of difference im sure. I have heavy stock size tires and feel if I go with a lighter slightly taller skinner tire my mpg may improve, who knows. Look forward to see what they look like.
 
Weight increase is 2 lbs per tire. I just dont get it. The truck is bone stock. With gas rumored to go to $5 a gallon by 2012, Im thinking now may be a good time to set the T4R free.
 
had you checked the dulop gas mileage recently before the swap, with the cold weather and all? Did you have the 18-20 as hand calculated MPG or lie-o-meter "dash reading". With the new tire size you have to add a percentage calculation in as well 1.6% difference.

of course a 1.6% difference isnt much, take your mileage per tank and multiply by 1.6% then divide by gallons per tank.

350 miles a tank x 1.6% = 5.6 "6" so your getting 356 miles per tank instead of 350. Thats not a large enough change to make up .5MPG so nevermind. Was hoping I could make you feel better.

If you didnt check mileage recently before swap, it might be the cold weather. Mine has dropped almost 2mpg in the last few weeks with the cold weather, no change in anything vehicle wise..
