What pressure are the tires set to? If they are 44psi (max) tires try 38-41psi and see if that helps. Hand calculated mpg shouldn't go down...

MPG is hand calculated. I will check pressure tomorrow and set to 38-41. I am taking into account the "winter mix" gas. I made the same trip to Rochester for Thanksgiving on the the dunlops and got to 19 mpg. Cruise set at 72.

MPG is still bad. I realize that "winter" gas plays a roll in this also, but I am taking that into account. Sorry, no pics yet. Our weather has been terrible and I dont have a garage to clean up the rig and snap some pics. i would only go for this size if you can get a good deal. Dont plan on making it up with gas mileage.

Thanks for the update Bowhunter. I still like the size, im not so sure my MPG will change much, I already have aggresive cheap/heavy A/t's that came with the vehicle, so my difference and the difference between ur dunflops may be different, who knows. Its gonna be a few months before I get tires, just like planning ahead.

The tires are absolutely AWESOME in the snow. I couldnt be happier with the foul weather performance, which was a huge factor when I was making my decision. I guess you have to take the good with the bad. I am anxious to see what happens in the spring when "normal" gas returns. We got another 8 inches of snow last night and today so it will be some time before pics. to the naked eye, its not much different, but for a T4R enthusiast you would be able to tell the difference.

This seems like a substantial drop in MPG but do consider the fact that most OEM tires are selected for their MPG so that Toyota (and other mfr's) can eek out a bit higher CAFE rating. When we select tires in the aftermarket we tend to compare handling, traction, noise, etc. so always expect aftermarket tires to hit you a bit in the MPG department. Also, I find that even tires that are the same size can vary. A 265/70R16 is only going to be closer to 265 than 255 or 275 and closer to 70 than 65 or 75 (the rim size is the only one I've seen have very little variance). If your old tire was already on the small side (more turns per mile) and then you wore down the tread you may be adding 5% or so if your new tire comes from the factory on the large end of the sizing scale and has full tread depth. Plus, full tread depth tires squirm more, giving you another small hit to MPG. I've found that MPG comes up enough to notice after a few tanks of fuel (if you watch carefully).

Gas mileage update, in one word.............Pathetic. If your looking at this tire and size combination dont expect any "increase" in mpg. In fact, expect a DECREASE. I just returned from a trip to Rochester NY on I90. MPG went from 18.5 - 20 HWY, to 15 !!!!!!! Keep in mind this is in comparison to the factory dunlops.

they are nice and quite, and track well, but wow what a slap in the face. It may be time to send the T4R down the road, I wont be able to afford many family trips this summer at this rate. Maybe its time anyway, its a 2003 with 83K and the wife uses it as a mall crawler. I dont need the V8. There are more road friendly options out there.

I have Cooper ATR's and i get 16-20 mpg on a 3rd gen which gets worse MPG than a 4th gen would. I feel like your driving style may have changed on that trip, maybe some headwinds, or crap gas, cause if you bought cheap stuff it will affect milage, as does tire pressure.

Bummer to hear about your MPG loss, Im shopping for tires for my 3rd gen as we speak.

Im torn between the stock equivalent size (265/65/17) , or the slightly talller 255/70/17

Im still shocked at how much your mpg decreased with just a slight increase in size..

I have 2 definitions, but for this topic, crap gas is the "global" brand fuel vs. Shell or something like that. I understand its mostly the same gas, but its the additives are different, but i have noitced mpg difference on the 4runner and the tdi jetta between these 2 specific brands and 2 specific stations.

Additives will make no difference in MPG between two consecutive tanks of fuel. Perhaps after thousands of miles of fuel with poor quality additives or not enough additives you could start to spot some kind of difference.

My criteria for good fuel is that it needs to be fresh, clean and contain as little ethanol as possible.
