George washington national forest: do-able with a stock 4runner?

Hey everybody, just thought I would ask some opinions on some of the trails there. To me it looks like most of the trails are do-able with a stock 4runner (peter's mill, etc) but just wanted to get some personal opinion from people who have been there before.
I'm new to the wheeling scene and eventually plan to get a 3/2 suspension spacer lift, wheel spacers, and some 265/75's or 70's. I would think that would be all I need for some light wheeling in the future (like the GWNF trails). But untill then I was thinking about taking my stock t4r up there just to do some trail running. So should I be fine if I were to do some of the lighter trails up there?

Most of the trails will be no problem. I had my brand new stock Trooper through them a few years back.

Yes, just have someone spot you on the more technical stuff. Some of it is really easy some isn't.

What's going on dude? Haven't seen or heard from you in ages. I've been hanging around here 'cause I've been thinking about ditching the crawler and the tow rig and building a mild 4Runner.

As noted above, just about all of the GWNF can be done in a stock rig. Looks like there are some people going next weekend (to the Harrisonburg area, not Peters Mill area), the thread is here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-r...washington-national-forest-labor-day-run.html.

I think I might head down there for some camping that weekend. Not sure if I'll meet up with that group or just do my own thing. But if anybody reads this and wants to tag along I'm cool with it.

Thanks for the info guys, looked at some more footage from some of the trails there and your right it doesn't look bad. Hopefully I can get up there some time:thanks:

Jason how's it going ? Good to see you're still around.
John (Kajo) showed up here a few weeks ago too.

You still running the same rig ?

Take a friend..... some of the dumbest things I have ever seen have happened on trails that you could have gotten a volvo wagon down if ya hit it hard enough....
if your new to the scene take you time and build your skill set, take a friend to spot ya and a tow strap for insurance. Have fun
remember, the best mod we can do is driver mod
cheers

Yeah, John got a 3rd gen and is gonna build it up some. He was planning to sell his crawler but I guess he's keeping it.

Yep, same rig. Got some used 37" Pitbulls on DIY beadlocks recently, and finally put a roll cage in it last summer. Otherwise it's the same old pile.

You will have no problem with your 4Runner.

We'll be there this weekend (Friday afternoon through Monday) if you want to meet up. If you do run into any parts your uncomfortable with we can spot you, or help as needed.

RiFF RaFF,

I'd love to but I can't sadly, being a junior in HS has its disadvantages...hopefully in college I can get out there a couple times though if you guys are still making trips up there every one in a while. Plus I recently found out that I'm not allowed to do anything to my truck or really go off road untill I'm on my own financially anyway...(parents...).
But for all the guys heading out there this weekend, have fun!

i was at GWNF for big dogs earlier this year and im going this coming weekend.. i have 2.5" lift on mine with duratracs and i must say.. i dont think u can do "most" of the trails without some decent damage.. what do you guys think? i have a 5th gen

thats what you get for buying a fifth gen

but actually, i ran it with 2.5/1.5 before my duratracs with street tires and had zero issues. some of the stockers dinged up their skids but all in all pretty light damage.

I think you're talking about two different places. Big Dogs events are on private property at The Cove, near Gore, VA (west of Winchester). There are definitely very difficult trails there.

This thread is about the area of the George Washington National Forest that is around Strasburg, Edinburg, and Woodstock, VA. Specifically Peters Mill and Taskers Gap. Those trails are totally doable in a stock rig.

Me and a couple other guys are gonna head out there...probably first weekend in October if anyone wants to meet up.

Wish I could, but I'll be in Germany visiting my son who's in the Air Force at Ramstein and will be gone until the middle of October.

There's another run in the works to the GWNF in the spring of 2014 - check out the Mid-Atlantic VA/MD/DC forum.

:hungry:
