Get a brake controller for your trailer.

It's only $100 or so for a name brand one.
I pulled a 2k lb. Camper for a year without one and really don't think I needed it until I put one on. I'm traveling full time pulling the camper and figured I could use the insurance when I go over the Rockies in a month and the controller makes life so much easier even on flat ground in Kansas.

Get one. Period. Even if the trailer is light.

Totally agree. I had one on my Tundra the entire time I had it, 13 years, and loved it. Of course I did a lot more towing with it, camper, car trailer etc. So when I got my 4R I almost immediately put one on it. I've had it 2 1/2 years and I've yet to use it. I no longer have a camper and I haven't had a reason to pull my car trailer. Go figure. But I firmly believe in having one if you're pulling anything over about 2K lbs with a 4runner. Apart from the safety it's just knowing that you're not wearing out your brakes every time you stop.

No time for a trans cooler, but a new radiator and transmission flush should hold for now. If the transmission dies, well, it has 220k miles on it and replacing it is cheaper than a new car. I plan on just hanging behind the semi truck going up the mountains at 40mph.
 
Half the work of installing a tranny cooler is moving the radiator. Its well worth the time and money.

I didn’t move my radiator.

About the brake controller, someone mentioned that 4th Gens with the tow package have it behind the driver’s kick panel. So you have to remove the kick panel to access it? Anyone have a pic?

I didn't need to remove any panels on mine to install the controller. I installed the RedArc controller. Took more time to install the control knob (I didn't use the button insert) in the trim of the dash trim around the radio than the controller itself.

Highly recommend the Red Arc controller. Switching between manual and automatic braking modes is easy and their auto mode is really effective as well.
 
For both my 4 Runners I installed Tekonsha Brake Controller. No issues towing 1500 lb Trillium Trailer. Easy install. Works great esp those long hills,
