Fold the bottom part of the rear seats up, towards the front of the vehicle...put a blanket in between the front seat and drape it over towards the back...lay down the back part of the rear seats and put a blanket between the already folded part and what you are laying down now...in essence, there will be no visible seats or leather...i always put a sleeping bag down as the second blanket when i travel with my lab and german shepherd. it gives them a little more comfort...i put bags between my seat and the dogs so they can't get all up in your grill while you are driving...it works great when we travel from indiana to arizona and back

My dog has always just rode in the very back, no barriers or anything. The main thing you want to do is start off training them where to be from the beginning, especially Dobies because they can be very stubborn!

haha i bought the 4runner FOR the dogs! I have a malamute and a husky and I just fold the seats up and they have the entire back area to walk around in, all three windows to hang their heads out of, they love it. I have the 4runner mat in the back to protect the actual attached carpet but just use the shopvac and it takes care of the loose hair.

Either way it sounds like you all are asking for a four legged 90 + lbs projectile to decapitate you or take out the windsheild for a easier escape ?

My GSD rides in the back seat like she owns it. lol When she was small, we put her in a crate in the back, and she'd be knocked out in 10 minutes. She did really well.

Fold the back seats down and put in some blankets / towels and a few old pillows for bedding should work great. You might even want to buy a bed to specifically keep as a "car bed" make it something big enough they can walk around in (mainly circle to lay down) but not so big that they don't have other room to walk and or stretch out in. Having a towel back there also makes for quick and easy clean up if need by. Good luck and happy travels.

My dog preferred the back seat. He sat on the seat and could kinda brace himself into it that way. I would avoid the front seat for sure due to the dog ending up on your lap or the windshield in a braking or accident situation. If the dog is on the back seat at worst he will only hit the back of the front seat and not the windshield or on your lap as easily. It did suck when I had to slam on the brakes a couple times and he slid onto the floor.
He was close enough to see him but safer in the back seat in my opinion.

My two dogs go everywhere with me. I found a cover for the back seat from petedge.com it works great and it can be washed. I just put a seat cover in the front to keep the claw marks to a minimum

We put our Golden Retriever in the very back with some cushioning and blankets. The seat is up because of our baby, but we did use a cage and put the rear seat down before he arrived. We use a Thule rooftop carrier for our cargo - probably need to get a bigger one than the 1100 we have.

I have a built-in camping set up in the back that includes a shelf for the dog. Here's the thread on it. I need to update thread with new pics.

The shelf brings the 70lb lab up higher and closer to the side window. I am thinking of some way to cover or block the window, so while wheeling he doesn't get thrown into it. Work in progress.

Our two flat coat retrievers rule the back of the 4Runner - Rocco 80lbs and Stella 60lbs. I've tried sheets, old tarps, and different barriers. What I finally ended up with is a decently thick tarp and then some cheap sheets on top. I've setup the tarp to be tucked in the back with enough extra at the top so when the seats are folded down it easily then tucks into the folded seats. It is a cheap solution and cleanup is easy. As for the front seat entry, we ended up training them instead of keeping the barrier.
We also went on quite a roadtrip this summer along the east coast and they slept in the truck at a number of campgrounds. Due to the mosquitoes I ended up creating netting with magnets around the back window and the back side windows to allow circulation. It looked ugly but worked out quite well.
