Getting Dog....HOW DO YOU TRAVEL WITH THEM?

Hey All,

We are adding another member to our family a Doberman Pincher. I have had dogs before and have traveled with them all the time...just not in my t4r!

Can people chime in and throw some pictures on here of pet separators in the back or seat covers they use? I have leather and I don't want it tore up. I was thinking of using a blanket for the back and letting our new dog "Beckham" chill in the back.

ANy cool IDEAS??

i just use a large size dog cage. ive got 1 steel & 1 cloth material that is much lighter.

The trunk no cage, no barrier. Its a 70lb yellow lab.

The reality of it is, if your in a severe accident Fido is most likely toast seatbelt or not.

In a cage you just get the cheese grader effect. I love my dog - dont worry ahah!

When we travel we usually have our pup with us. She's a mix breed "mutt" that weighs about 90 lbs. I put the rear seat down and put a blanket in an area large enough for her to lay or sit comfortably for the trip. We usually stop every couple of hours at a rest area or a place that safe for the put to walk on a leash so she can relieve herself and we can stretch our legs.

The hard part is cleaning up her hair when we get back from the trip. :

I've traveled with big and small dogs and the most important thing I've found is for them to have somewhere comfortable that's just their space. I've never sectioned off any area, usually there's just space where there's luggage in the back, and everything else belongs to the dog.

Pins are huge so I doubt you're going to worry with a seatbelt - I'd just put him/her in the back with blankets and chew toys. If you don't have all-weather liners, I'd also put a big blanket or tarp down first, just to mitigate any unforseen, uh, accidents.

i have a lab/aussie mix. no cage no barrier no seatbelts no issues. he sits in back with the window down and watches the cars and people. long trips hell just lay down and sleep. if you just get on them first couple times about jumping over the seats they will stop and you wont have an issue again.

+1 Same deal here. 60 lbs dog in the back, no cage, no barrier with no issues. I do have a cargo-liner in the back though to keep his dirt contained.

In the far back. One end of blanket goes over headrests and tucks in underneath front of headrests, other end gets tucked in under edge of parcel shelf and then lock down parcel shelf. Did it that way for 4 years in a 4Runner with two dogs no problem. Pet barriers don't work.

My girl just hangs out in the back. I roll the back window down about half way for her (weather permitting). She doesn't try to jump over the back seat either. I have the Weathertech rear floor liner which helps protect the rear cargo area from hair, mud, water, etc.

My 100 lb German Shepherd just chills in my backseat. The very back is always filled with stuff (sub, tools, recovery gear etc....) so he is lucky!

No problems, but it really depends on your dog.

My dog actually owns the runner. I'm the driver. Buddy is 60lb English Setter. He gets the entire back with seats folded forward, flannel sheet covers the seatbottoms and headrests, moving blanket covers the entire cargo area, and another blanket thrown in for his comfort. It's a '00 ltd with leather. the rear seats still look new. Lock the windows so fido doesn't put his paw on the switch and either fully open the window and fall out or close the window on his neck.

What do you people use for mats for the dogs? Has anyone tried the Hamilton Ultimate Pet Liner Cargoliner :: Ultimate Pet Liner™ :: Full Liners liner out? I don't want my dog getting the back dirty or scratching it up.

i had something similar in my old blazer. it attaches with velcro that is sticky taped on, bad thing is, every summer the heat would soften the glue & the velcro strips would fall off mainly around the window areas. even tried that super outdoor stuff by 3m & still nothing held. i tried everything from separaters,seat belts, tiedowns, etc. nothing seemed to work , mainly cause kids get a kick out of teasing a dog, so finally solved that problem with the only thing that worked, a cage thats straped down.

My boxer takes the whole back area. I have a roof pod for my gear :whipping2I throw her big pillow bed in and in she goes. Hot days I'll roll the back window down a bit but she usually just sleeps. Don't really need a barrier because the rear seat backs are high enough and she doesn't try to crawl over.

if you want to keep a dog contained in the very back, i've found that a horse trailer tie works the greatest. you can get these at any feed and tack store, or a place like tractor supply. in essence its about a 3 ft long leash. i had a lab that no matter what you did, he would climb over the seat and track stuff all over the console, so this was the best solution. plenty of room for him to sit or lie down, and for 11 bucks i couldnt beat the price.

My Yellow Lab is a spaz. She's also very much a dog that wants 'to do the right thing'. I used a dog barrier for about 3 weeks. Now that she has the routine and 'where she's supposed to be' down I have no issues.

My Lab-Boxer is mellow and rides on the back seat, no issues.

he's actually extremely mellow. he was my fiance's, and my fiance would let him sit in the front seat of his tacoma when rob would get out of the truck. needless to say, cocoa didnt understand when i wouldnt let him get up front when we'd get out of the truck. it took restraining him for him to get the picture.

Just as an addition to this thread:
I used to use a wire mesh barrier on my previous ride ('99 Pathfinder), but in the 4runner my ~80lb Irish setter just stays in the back. Attached is a picture of the rig I used in the Pathfinder so I could keep the hatch glass open. I made a slight modification & moved it to the 4runner. Works great so I can leave the back window down & not worry about him escaping. It's all PVC tubing & is removable from the tubes attached to the rear hatch panel.

Dogs like trucks!
