Getting New 4th gen Tires! Pick One...

I've done more reading and research that I thought possible! I've looked at so many pictures my head is about to explode! I'm currently running Firestone Destination LE 265/70r17, which is basically a street tire. I'll be off road from time to time for fun, other times for duck hunting (which can get nasty). I've ruled out a M/T after running them for years on my Tacoma, it just doesn't make sense for me on the 4runner. It's too smooth and quiet for me to throw knobby tires on it. So I checked my local tire shop today and have basically narrowed it down to two tires:
1. Mastercraft Courser AT2, which is made by Cooper.
2. Kumho Road Venture A/T, slightly more aggressive.
and maybe:
3. BFG KO's

but nice as they may be, I don't think the BFG's will be any better in the mud, and possibly worse than the Kumhos. I know they are a tougher tire, but the Mastercraft has a 50k mile warantee. The other two don't. So you see my delima? I'm leaning more and more towards the Mastercraft for the smooth, quiet ride, but like the look of the BFG and want the mud capability of the Kumho. HELP! I'll be sticking w/ 265's for now and will be adding FJ springs and possible a front spacer in the near future. What's your vote and why? Please don't bring up any other tires unless they are awesome and cheap!

I don't know that it is better, sorry if I sounded biased towards the Mastercraft. I would think the BFG is the best of the best, but I also know they suck in the mud. Just looking for more opinions that's all.

I agree. BFG's. Had them on my 3rd gen and loved them. would have gotten them again but i got my bridgestones for around 60 dollars less a tire. BFGS no doubt!
 
Heck I may just do the BFG's. I looked at the Kumho a/t's the other day and they are much more aggressive than the BFG. Bigger voids and they no doubt would be better in the mud. I agree most A/T's suck in the mud, but surely some are better than others?
 
Hey man, I'll have my thread with pics of mine posted up in a hour or two (waiting on pics to load). That'll give you more to go off of. The BFG's are nice, and what I wanted, but the cost compared to others just isn't worth it to me. Maybe it will for you during duck season, but I got all 5 for about the same as 4 of the BFG's would have cost.
 
Where do you live? The Kuhmo's are supposed to be pretty good in the snow, civilized on-road. As for the mud the BFG M/T's are the only one that will work at all. The BFG's will work off-road and in the snow but you'll lose some of the ride quality. The good thing is they are tough and you're less likely to cut a sidewall off-roading. Truth is though if the LE's have taken you through a season or two without getting cut you're probably fine...

Of the tires you listed I'd try the Kuhmo. Of the ones you didn't look at the my tires, link in sig, and the ones the ArkSwampRider is about to show you :D

I live in Arkansas. The main reason I was considering the Kumho is due to the slightly more aggressive tread pattern. I have the crappy LE's now but bought the ride used and have only put 3k on it. I'm quite certian I won't be happy w/ such a street tire come deer and duck season. I can't justify puting mud tire just yet, maybe a few years down the road. I like the dynapro's, but they are about the same as the Mastercraft I mentioned, both have 50k mile warantee, however the Mastercraft's are 6 ply, which I really like. I read the BFG's have a three ply sidewall and rub slightly on the control arm. As good as they are, I'll go for one of the cheaper tires, Kumho or Mastercraft. Kumho will be louder I'm sure, but better in the mud.
I'll get a out the door price tomorrow and decide based on that. They are both good tires.

If you accept that the ride quality will deteriorate some with the Mastercrafts then maybe they are the right answer. Make sure you run them at a high enough pressure. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/perfo...ers-more/40803-lt-vs-p-inflation-article.html


I'll bet the Kumho's would be quieter with their Revo like pattern... Just my 2cents.
 
KOs are great off road but on-road they are simply so-so and too pricey for what they accomplish. If you truly off road a lot then I could see spending the $$$ on BFGs but on a daily driver there's better options. You gotta really take considerations of what you will be doing with your 4Runner and make a wise choice that fits your needs.

Ask yourself:
What weather will the tires see?
How many miles do you drive a year?
How much pavement vs dirt will you drive on?
And how much money do you want to spend?
 
I've ruled out the BFG mostly due to cost and I don't need the extra sidewall support as I'm not off road that much.
It's now back to the Mastercraft or Kumho, The Kumho is more aggressive for sure, but I'm worried about road noise. I was leaning towards 255's, but think I will stick w/ 265/70/17 in order to not loose any power and because I KNOW they fit w/o a lift or any kind of spacer. I'll let you know what I decide!
 
have you considered the Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10? I'm pretty sure they will be my next set of tires. $146/each shipped from tire.com
