Getting replacement CVs from a scrap vehicle.

I'm building up a selection of some parts, to fix components if I break on the trail. I found a person parting out their 4Runner and figured that would be the cheapest way to get OE replacement CVs. How will I be able to verify that they are OE and not just cheap replacements? What would be a fair price, assuming that the boots are still in good condition?

I just paid $102 for a pair of replacements from Advanced Auto. Now, these are not OEM, but they have a lifetime replacement warranty and I'm going to send my OEM ones back to have them rebuilt at CVJ (CVJ Axles - CV Axles & Steering Racks for all your needs).

As to your question of whether they are OEM or reman'd on the vehicle being parted out: the OEM has a slight taper in the middle like this (upper CV)

Thanks. Good info.

Is it true that only the OEM or OEM reman'd CVs will have the taper, and all non-OEM will have a straight shaft?

Can't answer that for you. Best bet is if you break one, replace it and get the broken one reman'd so you have a solid replacement if another goes out.

True, except I'm trying to buy a good used one before I break one :) I still appreciate your help.

Holy sh... You're alive! I figured you'd either died or possibly (more probably) killed that guy who hit your car and become incarcerated... Either way, glad I was wrong!

I don't have much to add here other than that Autozone's Duralast CV's have a lifetime warranty... I replaced both my OEM ones with those and they've held up great so far. If I were in your shoes I'd just buy one or two of those... If you break 3 on a trail you may well be screwed... But if you're breaking 3 on a trail I'd say it's meant to be.

I keep meaning to re-boot my OEM ones but I just haven't... Seems tedious.

Hey. Yep, I'm still out there, haven't needed to bust any heads :)

I've had concerns about the aftermarket CVs out there, but I'm sure getting one is much better than being empty handed. Did your boots wear out early because of the lift?

I have had good luck with my aftermarkets so far... But with the fact I have never even come close to breaking a CV... I guess I am just not hardcore enough.

I don't think my boots wore out EARLY because of the lift... I just think they wore out because I drove 110k without a lift then put one on... It's like an old guy deciding to go back to the gym after 20 years... It's going to be hard on the ol' joints.

My aftermarket boots are still in tip-top shape though after about 20k miles? Maybe a bit less.

If you wanted some OEMs though I imagine DeathCougar would be willing and able to sell you as many as your heart desired =)

Check out CVJ axles in Denver. They'll send ya some OE re-man's with long travel boots on them.

I will definitely look into them. From what I've read, they seam like the best option. I think I've read that left and right CVs are interchangeable? Maybe I should go ahead and buy one from them as a spare.
