I'll never buy another GM product. Only had two GM products in my life and they both had MAJOR mechanical issues. It is too bad an American icon like this is ending up gutted.

I would like to see it but don't count on it. The only way that will happen is when Toyota buys GM!

Our goverenment would never let GM go down. Same can be said of the major airlines.

Besides, GM has tons of cash, even with poor sales causing big losses and huge medical costs for retirees. In 2005,GM still sold double the vehicles (in the U.S.) that Toyota sold, even their sales were declining while Toyota's were rising. GM also sold one million more cars than Toyota worldwide.

GM also holds double the U.S. market share over Toyota. Things look like they are heading down for GM and up for Toyota, however. But before you give GM the kiss of death, read up on the facts.

I am very ignorant when it comes to big scale companies and their economics.

If GM sold so many cars, many more than Toyota, why is it in trouble? Is it loosing money on the cars sold? likely right?, so then why saying that selling more cars than other company that makes profit is a good sign? Please explain.

On average, GM is losing money on every vehicle it sells, while Toyota is making a profit on every vehicle.

GM is too fat and inefficient.... too many manufacturing plants for the demand they satisfy. They also have too many retirees who are sucking up their cash in the form of pensions and medical benefits.

GM will survive and return to a profitable company. They need to start building cars that more people want to buy. Their sales may be down lately, but they still sell more cars and trucks than anyone else on the planet.

They expect Toyota to be the company to sell the most vehicles in 2006.

Remember, GM sold only one million more vehicles than Toyota worldwide last year, but GM still doubled the sales of Toyota in the U.S.
 
it sucks to hear this happen even though i drive jap it makes me happy when american car companies do well i would want american car companies to do better than jap companieshelps our economy

If you really felt that way, you'd be driving a Chevy, not a Toyota.

I think most people who drive Japanese vehicles make the justification that it will be much more reliable than a comparable American vehicle. I definitely agree with that, but the fact remains that most people who are hardcore pro-American will buy nothing but vehicles from GM, Ford, or Daimler-Chrysler.

i don't quite remember, but i want to say both. i remember hearing it on tv and reading an artice, alhtough i don't quite remember where that article is now..

do remember, GM's ploy of employee pricing did help with sales last year. imo, its not exactly the smartest time to be releasing non-fuel economical vehicles, i.e. the Cadillac V series, etc.

There's absolutely no way in the world that Toyota will sell more vehicles than GM in the U.S. this year, next year, or the year after. The numbers are just too far apart for that to happen any time soon.

And remember that GM's biggest sellers are their truck/SUV lines, which are far from economical. Gas prices will have to rise higher than today's level to impact the sales of their truck/SUV lines. Recent history has already proven that.
 
Analysts say by 2015 Toyota will sell more vehicles than anybody in the US as they already dominate sales outside the US. We'll see what happens when Toyota finally releases the full size Tundra which Ford and Chevy are a little nervous since it will take a bigger bite of the pie for Toyota.

Where do you get your information? My research indicates that GM sells more vehicles worldwide than Toyota.
 
thing is though.. GM may sell more.. but u gotta remember GM also has more vehicles that end up not getting sold either.. and that is what is also hurting them.. They build in bulk.. they dont build by the demand... They build way to many vehicles and than by the end of the year they have to have this outrageous sales, which ends up hurting them in the long run..... Toyota will take over the market.. it is happening.. slowly but surely...

your 100% right but in my circumstances i wanted a suv v8 with a floor shifter not a column shifter, most american trucks come with column shifter plus insurance was way higher financially i mad the right choice. i guess now i feel bad because i could of supported my country by buying american and i didnt .
gm is one of the american symbol that repersents this country. u go to europe and talk about american cars and they will mention the vette or caddy's not ford or chrysler.

They also will be remembered for a bad business model that is eroding the company and is realistic they could fold or they'll be this small company just selling a few models in the next 20 years.

What?? Of course GM builds for demand, just like every other manufacturer. All of their vehicles get sold eventually, even if they sit on the dealership lot longer than the average vehicle.

Besides, sales are just one part of the picture. Why do you think GM is willing to sell vehicles at a loss? Simple--the back end economics. Once one of their vehicles is out on the road, there's plenty of money to be made on those vehicles.

My neighbor just purchased a V8 Explorer with a floor-mounted shifter.

Don't feel bad about the choice you made. I'm sure you had better reasons than just a V8 and floor shifter.
