Go cheap or purchase Moog parts?

Well the boots on my lower ball joint and my tie rod ends are going out. I found a forum to replace the lower ball joint with a ball joint press kit from advance auto. I found the parts on rock auto but was wondering should I purchase the less cost effective parts or get Moog parts? Recommend me what you would do!

Moog parts aren't that expensive, but I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives. I've currently got Moog FJ springs and Moog inner and outer tie rods on my rig and I have no complaints about the parts.

Short answer: I'd vote for Moog.

I like Moog stuff. I got their lower control arms, tie rods, and a few other things. The only Moog products that I've ever bought that I didn't like were u-joints. They just didn't fit right.

I did the cheap route a few years ago on my GMC. big mistake. wheel bearing went in just over a year. changed to moog and no problems after almost 3 years. worth the few extra dollars.

I am actually in the same boat... I did a search and found that 3rd gen guys were having problems with moog ball joints going out and causing some really dangerous stuff to happen. Most the post were really old.. 2013 time period.. has this been addressed?

Was it only a 3rd gen thing?

can anyone shine some light?

I think Moog has a lifetime warranty but all those problem happened three years ago so hopefully they got better

It is only a 3rd gen thing. Their setup had the weight of the truck trying to pull the LBJ apart whereas in 4th gens the weight pushes the joint together.

To the OP - before replacing the LBJ I suggest you ensure that your alignment cams are not frozen and the bushings are in good shape. If you end up having to replace the entire LCAs the new ones come with LBJs installed.

+1 Moog

I vote Moog parts... I have Moog upper and lower ball joints and Moog FJ TTUE springs all around and love them all....

its strange, some days I see moog haters here some days I see moog lovers.
In any case, if your ball join is fine, you can replace the boot and regrease it... not sure if that is an attractive solution for you.

Personally if if your bushings are bad, I'd just replace the whole control arm which comes with an OEM ball joint :)

there might be a boot replacement for the tire rod too. I cant remember off hand.

For the 4th gens

MOOG K500017 it's about 24 dollars on rockauto

I believe my alignment cams are not frozen because I just got an alignment, do you think replacing my LBJ will hold up with my 3 inch lift?

I'd think as long as they changed camber and/or caster then they had to have moved the alignment cams and you are all set.

The lift should not cause a problem for the LBJ, it will just sit at a slightly different angle than before. Have fun!

i have all moog inners outers and lbj's. they seem to be alright so far but the inner and outer tie rods rusted right away in cali weather. might be good to prime and paint them.

about 8 months and they were almost brown. its gonna be a problem with most of the tie rods out there. Most of them are the same except there are some that have grease fittings. My local autozone has lifetime warranty on theirs and you can just mark it and replace it for a lil cheaper.
