It actually is the exact definition of patent trolling with the vagueness of what they patented the lawsuits are endless as we can clearly see. The patent was for vehicle specific racks, and again last time I checked they weren't the first to build a roof rack? And this was discussed in full detail between several engineers, fabricators, and lawyers. (If you read the threads in their entirety you would see this)
What it looks like to everyone else is them stomping healthy competition so they can have a monopoly on the market. Just ask Jason Demello who stated the same thing and deals with DO knockoffs all the time. The best way around it is improving your product and getting by on a great reputation. Gobi did it so they could continue price gouging and get away with shitty customer service and a subpar product.
But if you want to sit and justify that purchase that's fine but how the whole suit unraveled isn't justifiable. Cheers to you though brother. Enjoy the rack

It's not vehicle specific, the claims I listed are the only claims on the patent.
I even linked to the patent, view it for yourself, it is an ornamental patent for the design. They patented their design, the look

So you didn't read the comparison between the two racks? Or recently see how Gobi embarrassed themselves while going after Baja and they were called out for misrepresentation and had their dates wrong. Solid.

I actually fully understand both. Also saw and personally discussed with ID2000 and what they were doing to their competitors and how they were going about it. No matter how you cut it I still wouldn't promote someone with poor business practices like them. But again up to you to justify your own actions and turn a blind eye. :hatsoff:

To that point, I don't have to justify sh!t to anybody on this board and my eyes are not blind. Love what I got and I'm going to use it whenever I can. I hope others love the rack they have and do the same.

I have only used mine for looks and still think its worth it

If not installed carefully can increase chance of water leak
They rust eventually, sometimes from the inside out.
Wait times have sometimes gone as long as 6 months, while promising less
Increased height for garages
You will spend even more money on things to bolt onto and carry in it
Your wife will think it's weird that people compliment your rack...

Are the excessive wait times through distributers like Trail and Duty or direct from Gobi? Group buy related?

I think the wait time is all the same. I think you can count on 10-12 weeks on average. You may order from Trail Duty but I think its drop shipped straight from Gobi. Hell, I just ordered the Gobi ARB awning mounts from Trail Duty and they are having them shipped direct from Gobi.

Gobi No Rise
Before someone flames you for not searching around I will tell you that unless you have an abnormally small garage opening or a big lift on your 4runner then you will be fine parking in your garage even if you get the normal rise Gobi rack. There are pictures on this board of the 4runners with Gobi's in garages. Hell, I put a Yakama load warrior basket on the stock roof rails and it fit easy and that combo is a lot taller than any Gobi from the roofline. Hope this helps.

Post 7, that's from the roof not compared to stock rack, so you aren't adding much.
