Gobi Rack - Advantage and disadvantages

but I haaate having a messy/crowded interior on long trips, plus I often times sleep in the truck on "expeditions", so it's nice to be able to at least keep some stuff up top (typically the lighter and bulkier items).

That's the primary reason I got mine. Maybe I am a gear whore and a overpacker. I find the back of runner is crammed even for a couple day camping trip. That's with the back seats folded down and just the GF and I. I don't know what I'd do if I had to bring friends in the rig with me or had kids. I have not camped since I installed the rack, but the plan is to throw some of the big, bulky, semi-light, stuff up top - chairs, sleeping bags, tent, awnings, sleeping pads, various bedding, clothing duffel bags, etc. I need to try and pair down what I bring as well. It would be nice to have a little utility/camping trailer.

... and the long black hole of a wait for my Gobi rack begins ... now. Just placed an order with them for a Stealth as I like the fact that I can have adjustable 1" inch tubes that will work with my Yakima kayak racks.

Had to ditch my Yakima rack as it really did not hold as much as I would like It also shifted about 6 inches from some trails/washboards I went through over the weekend. That shift also caused some roof damage on my truck due to the shovel and hi-lift. Ah the memories ...

Being versatile to hold Yakima accessories and what not was a BIG PLUS for me too.

What should I order?

Ok...so I'm going to pull the trigger on the Gobi soon but I'm not 100% sure on what completely to order. I have a sunroof and I think it's best to keep that open, but I would like to hear opinions saying otherwise. I've read the threads and I guess the removable crossbars are the way to go. I do plan on getting the wind deflector, but what is the riser about? I see some people saying they wish they didn't have it? What is the riser? What do you guys recommend when I put my order in?

The "riser" (rise vs no rise) means the the front few inches rises above the back. A no rise option means it's the same level all the way from front to back.

I went with both adjustable cross bars.

I don't have a sunroof, but if I did I'd get the removable sunroof floor to I could still use it.

I got a no-rise with sunroof cut out, and two removable cross bars. I had intended to get the sunroof insert later if needed, but it's not needed. I put the two crossbars over the sunroof and i can load/strap stuff right on top of them no problem.

Alternately, one could easily fabricate a sunroof platform with sheet of plywood and few U-bolts. Not pretty, but if it's gonna be covered with gear anyway...

My main concern with the rack is how much airflow you get via the sunroof with it open + the rack. I value spring/autumn driving with the sunroof open and back glass down but don't want to lose that airflow.

I forget how the airflow was when I had mine, but given the lead time on these I doubt you'd have a problem selling it to another forum member if it doesn't work out.. could probably get them to help uninstall it for you as well.

Ordered my Stealth rack for my '17 TRD Pro about a week ago and was quoted 12-16 weeks for delivery.

-No Sunroof, so no cutout needed

-Added 40" light bar, so kept the slight rise to protect the bar

-2 adjustable bars

-accessories galore (hi lift mount, tie dows, ax/shovel mount)

-ladder and HD gas struts for rear hatch included

Patiently waiting for it, and will be also mounting my bikes/kayak mounts up there.

It's working pretty well! The wind deflector is highly recommended -- it whistles like crazy without it.

A few tips:

Get another person to help with the ladder. The step where the adhesive hits the liftgate at the bottom of the ladder is difficult, even with two people.

Go buy extra anti-seize. The amount provided by Gobi is far from enough. I found a tube of Permatex Anti-Seize at AutoZone for under $5.

Don't tighten down the wind deflector screws until the tape is on. The screws and nuts provided ended up getting shredded when I did the initial fitting of the wind deflector to measure where the tape belongs. I had to go to the hardware store to replace them. You may need to hold the deflector down while someone else uses masking tape to mark the location.

Get a box wrench, preferably with a ratchet built in. I have big hands and it was REALLY difficult to get a wrench underneath the rack to hold the nut while I tightened the screw that holds the rack to the support brackets.

So far, I'd say it's worth the wait. It's a really well built rack. I've had a couple of my neighbors come over and ask about it.
