I could be wrong but I'm assuming they're referring to Gobi's practice of sending cease and desist letters to any small shop making low profile basket type roof racks.
They're kind of like the Apple of the roof rack world: threatening lawsuits with "patent infringements" on things such as curved corners and other super basic features that shouldn't be patentable.
I don't have any links or sources for this information, just what I've seen on this forum with regards to previous discussions on why people are highly against Gobi.
It sucks because, in my opinion, the Gobi rack is the only roof rack that doesn't look like utter, hideous trash on top of the 4Runner.

Care to elaborate why the poster should do his own research than ask the source of the warning as to why people should “STAY FAR AWAY”?
A quick google search tells me all I need to know. :O

Good point, but me thinks there are no discounts to be had this way.
The Gobi GB from last December was fantastic. My $1,600 3rd gen rack (it's now $1,700) was $1,400 and that included an ARB awning that I sold for a BF making my final price $1,300.
Considering it includes crossbars and ladder along with great looks and functionality, I'm not sure there is a better rack on the market at that price. YMMV.
I am a patient man when it comes to saving $300.

I'm in for the group buy! Been meaning to pull the trigger on a Gobi rack for a couple of months now.

If anyone has inside information please correct me, but I can't see how a group buy would work with Gobi. They're inundated with orders as it is, and from the little I know about their production process it seems that either:
A) They'll bump current orders from non group customers back just to fill this huge one.
or B) You all will have to wait like a year instead of the standard 4-6 months.
I think that honestly Gobi just wouldn't say no being approached for a bulk order because they're a business whose business is to stay in business.
They also know that once you place the order you can't cancel it without a $500 cancellation fee.
Don't get me wrong I love the Stealth I got from them just saying.

I would be surprised if this GB happened. The last “feeler” Gobi GB completely tanked due to Gobi not having much interest.
