Going for the Best Look on 4th gen...

What tires do you guys think look best on the 4th gen 4runner? I am looking to buy new tires within the next week, so any opinions help!

The tires in size 265/70/17 that I am looking at are:

Bridgestone Dueler AT RH-S's
Cooper discoverer AT3's
Toyo Open Country AT's
Nitto Terra Grappler AT's

Out of your list the Terra Grapplers. I have the Bridgestone Revo 2`s and prefer them over the other AT`s on the market. I am on my 2nd set. The first set went 60K miles. I also just put Goodyear DuraTracs on my FJ and like them a lot as well.

Depends so much on your needs!!
I bought the Firestone Destination AT and couldn't be happier. I found hard to believe all the positive comments they got, considering the price is relatively cheap. But it is all true.

Quiet on the road, good for offroad (for an AT), looking good and not expensive. Can't ask for more.

I've had dueler at's and nitto tg's and liked the tg's for traction but the duelers for mileage and longevity.

I LOVE my cooper AT3's. Great tire, cheap, good warranty, deep tread, quiet, what else could you ask for? Again, all these are good choices it seems so you won't be let down with any choice IMHO.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I was getting the Toyo AT's until I got to the store and compared the Cooper to the Toyo. Cooper was by far the better choice.

So it looks like the duelers are out of the picture! I would love to get the GY dura tracs, but they are a little out of my budget at the moment. Please keep posting and voting on what tires you like, the more the better!

How a tire looks should be one of the last considerations you have. Traction, braking, role control (lateral rim to tire movement), ride and longevity should be your main concerns along with tread style to match your driving. Those are all good looking tires, but none will match Michelin for longevity and overall performance.

Based on the choices you've posted, I'd vote for the Nittos. But if all else aside, the Duratracs are pretty sick.

Did you look into the BFGoodrich Rugged Terrains? I'm considering these ...

Careful with the Falken Rocky Mountains. If you look at them up close and in person you'll notice the shoulder has a huge piece of rubber under the treads so after the should treads wear down just a little you'll have a smooth piece of rubber there - if that makes sense.

Dumb question. I've read the 265/70/17s will fit on stock suspension with no mods and no rubbing. Is this true? The OP's sig states all stock.

You can sort of see what I'm talking about with the shoulder tread depth here. It isn't as deep as the rest of the tire's shoulder depth.

I have read many reviews on the Terra Grapplers and many times and in many places I have heard people complaining about the treadwear. Multiples of people have been reported getting about 20,000 miles out of these tires, which is very low IMO. I like the look of them and I heard they handle alright, but based on reliablilty on treadwear I think I will pass. The coopers which I have continued to do research on have gotten better reviews on treadwear and are said to be an all-around good tire. The tread rating that I have found on the cooper at3's is 560 and have a higher load capacity of 115T. The Nitto terra grapplers at's on the otherhand have a rating of 500 for the treadwear, and have a load capacity of 113S.

After all my searches and looking at reviews I think I am going to go with the Cooper AT3's... I know the terra grappler is voted on as the best looking tire on the 4runner, but I am looking also for a reliable tire.

Glad you did your research and made an educated decision. I voted on the Coopers. My current set is my 1st set of Cooper tires and so far I've been extremely pleased. I know many that have owned the Terra Grapplers and just like you said, the tread life on them was meh.... I'm not totally off of Nitto's, I Love the Trail Grapplers, but I'd pass on the Terra's personally. I also know Cooper customers that are life long Cooper customers and from my experience I could see why.

If you want reliability and longevity on road, Michelins are your best bet. If you want an AT tire with great treadwear and traction on and off road, look at some Firestone Destination At's. Im not pushing them cuz i have them, its just a great tire.

I got about 25k on nittos with my old Titan and 25k on BFG AT's with 50% tread left. The nittos must use a softer compound than other companies. Great traction on rocks though!
