Going for the OME lift...

Sorry to add to the flood of OME lift threads.. I have tried posting in older lift threads already created but there is no activity. Sooo.... I am very close to pulling the trigger on an OME lift for my 2000 4runner.. I have searched and google image'd a billion times so I am pretty sure I am going to go with 881 coils and 90004 shocks in the front, and 906 coils and 60073 shocks in the rear. And I will get some 10mm spacers for the rear incase the front is too high. I would reaaaaally appreciate anyone's opinions. This is the last step before throwing money at the shop here and I have been back and forth between 880s and 881's. Im wanting to keep a stock-like ride, but also feeling like the 880's are just a tad too short. I want to have some noticeable lift. I have 265/75/16's.

Also I've never been able to find any feedback on the 60073 shocks, but the websites all say they are softer than the 60028's that most people have, which I feel will be better with the 906's to soften up the ride a bit, as I hear a lot of people saying they are really stiff. Does anyone know anything about these shocks? They are in the selection for the 3rd 4runner yet no one seems to have them. My only real concern overall with this lift is the 881's being too tall for the 906's, and the 906's being too stiff for daily driving... and Im hoping that 10mm spacers in the rear would be enough to give it just a hair above level stance when unloaded. I would rather not get the 890's as I cant afford the extra parts right now and I dont want a lot of forward rake.

I will make sure to post some pics and give my review once I have it installed as to add to the pool of OME resources.

IMO I would rather run LC rears. Yes there is a little rake but they ride so well on the road. They flex like crazy on the trail. I run the 881/90004 up front and its pretty good for the price. Its a little stiff with not bad. I had to run a toytec trim spacer front left to level front.

The rear I run tokico LC rear shocks, 7 wrap LC springs with an OME 10mm trim spacer in the rear left with my stock bump stops which gives about 1" rake over the front.

When I ran no stock bump stops the rear only had 1/2" rake to my front which is nothing really at all and good for when loading the rear with some weight.

It was a pretty cheap setup and works really well on and off road. If you stick with the OME they will ride level or sag when loaded. They also lift tires pretty easy when offroading compared. Superflex coils are pretty nice also. Give a little rake and better ride and flex.

It would help to know how much lift you want. A LC 8 wrap is going to give a LOT more lift than a 906, which is basically a stock replacement. I got 5" out of LC 7.5/8 wraps. It would look stupid with that much rake and only 265s for tires.

Honestly, it sounds like you've got it all figured out and have a good plan. I say go with whatever shock Toytec recommends to you, which I believe is the newer "soft" shock.

You also have cheap options for later on if you should decide that it's not tall enough or there's too much rake. A 1" coil spacer will solve that issue quickly.

My only other suggestion would be to try to find somebody with a lifted 4runner and ride along with them. Experiencing any kind of lift in our trucks in person may change your opinions from what you've done from reading online.

I do hate to do this, but I'll throw the stick in your spokes. I have the 881/90004 combo. Did 890 rears with 60028 Shocks. So far after 4k miles I sold the OME rear shocks due to insane not even funny stupid stuff ride. I leave my truck empty as it gets stock looking clean with 265's D loads. After being fed up I sent those rear shocks down road and put Bilstein 5125's in and its light years above and beyond closer to stock ride.

Now for front. Now that rear is great as my DD. I just ordered TRD tundra coils from Toyota and Bilstein 5100 Tundra shocks. I'll use my stock top plate with some Monroe top insulators online. From what I rear and one has compared it should be what I am looking for. As of now I feel every crack in the road and every bump jolts the entire dash. I'm use to lifted trucks, always had them. But this one I wanted to be smooth as butter for work and back and wheeling on weekends. Offroad OME didn't bother me somehow, but on road I am very excited to get these parts in and compare to current setup.

My suggestion is to go 880's with top plate spacers for small bump if height is what you want and have a stock ride then again I never drove on the 880's so going by assumption. Rear shocks I wish I tried the new softer OME ones but I was to scared to risk them sucking too so I did as the cult was doing and went 5125's. Seems like lot of people like the stock coils on tundra 5100's set on top 5th setting but again I can't say they r good or bad. Good luck hope you enjoy.

websites all say they are softer than the 60028's

since you're looking for opinions....that's kind of a worthless statement to pull from. anything will be softer than putting a solid metal bar where your shocks should be....which is exactly what 60028's feel like. maybe the 60073's are good, but "softer" is meaningless.

Okay so from what most of you are saying it sounds like a lot of the issues are with stiffness. I feel like a stiff'er' ride would be okay as I do mostly highway driving. But obviously I want the suspension to absorb bumps an give a smooth ride otherwise whats the point of having suspension. It's hard because there are such mixed opinions. Most say its absolutely a dream compared to stock and swear by it. But some others say it was a nightmare.

I am pretty sure I am going to get the 881/906 coils because I have seen a lot of trucks with them on here and that is what I am looking for with stance and height. Also I trust the brand as I have had OME on my 92 4runner which is why I am more comfortable with them. I feel LC coils would be way more lift than Im looking for, and I dont want to do the mods to have taller rear coils. Although I've heard good things about the LC's, I am not too worried about flex as I wont be doing any serious off roading. At this point I am more concerned about shocks. I want to get all OME for the sake of having it operate well together, but I have also heard that bilstein's are really good, as Moroney167 said, to help with the stiffness of the 906's. I am just cautious of mixing and matching, especially because my knowledge of other brands is very poor and it is not recommended generally speaking. Part of me wants to go Bilstein 5125, but I feel like I may try the "newer" option of the OME 60073 soft valve shocks just for the sake of trying it, maybe I can help others who have this problem by being the sacrificial lamb. Although I have not had the 60028's to be able to compare.

As for the 880 vs the 881, it is to my understanding that they are the same stiffness.... just slightly different heights? I would prefer the front to be close to 2" of lift and the rear slightly over. Kinda hoping I'll get 1.75 inches front and 2.25-ish inches rear with the 10mm spacers.

I recommend my set up. DD and off road frequently. I have Sonoran Steel 1.2 rear kit and Toytec adjustable coilovers on front. Stiff ride, but most good off road set ups are, and great flex off road. The rear kit comes with all you need. I chose the Toytec coilovers so I could adjust height as needed. I have 4" of lift in back and 3" in front.

So I just called the local shop here for an installation quote on new shocks and springs and they quoted me at 6.5 hours, around $500. Seems like a rip off to me... Just to swap out some coils and shocks? Shouldnt a reputable shop be able to do this in a couple hours or am I missing something here?

Its all based on labor rates and hours. It dont madder how long it takes them, they charge what the book says.

It is not hard to do it yourself. I put my lift on and I am not a mechanic. Takes time and looking through write ups on here, but it isn't hard.

update on 60073s?

foskco87:

Did you decide to go with the 60073s? Any info you can share on this? Or if not, which shock did you choose and what do you think?

I'm trying to also decide which shock to go with 906s and ride comfort is the major concern.

Edit: Decided to go with adjustable 5100 in front with TRD coils and 5100 in rear with 906 coils. Got everything just have not installed yet.
