Going in for my front LBJ recall tomorrow - what else should I have them do/check?

Called the dealer and learned that the front LBJ recall has never been done on the 4Runner I just bought with 155k miles. Tomorrow I'm taking it to the dealership to have it done.

But, while they're there, what else can I/should I ask them to replace or check? ITR/OTR would be "nice" but the OEM prices bite, and I heard they're not too bad to do at a later time yourself.

Comments/suggestions?

I can't think of anything I'd rather pay the dealer to do.

Brakes? Nope, I'd rather do the tundra upgrade.
Tie rods/ends? Not really such a weak point.
Lube? Easy to do yourself.
Radiator replacement? Way too expensive from a dealer, and pretty easy to boot.
Timing belt / water pump? At 150k, I would assume you are halfway-ish through your second ones.

Make sure to get a 2nd opinion on anything they say needs to be done. A lot of dealers will say you need a bunch of stuff to try and recoup the cost of the recall.

I always thought they get reimbursed by the manufacturer??

That's weird. I called about the rear sag recall and when I asked they said the weren't aware of any other recalls that were necessary. Is there a thread or a copy of the letter out there on this?

Not true at all. They're paid to do it by the manufacturer. It's free money for them.

How is it free money? They still have to do the work. Free money would be the manufacturer paying them for not doing anything. Warranty doesn't pay as high as regular shop time either. Regardless, there have been many cases where i have brought a vehicle in for warranty work and then they said i needed to do X Y and Z. Upon bringing it to another dealer, they said nothing needed to be replaced.

The main one i remember was for the steering relay rod recall for my 91 pickup. They did the recall and then said my balljoints, idler arm, and pitman are were needed. Quote was $1200 :crazy:. Had someone else look at it and they said all was good.

The lower ball joint recalls (SSC's 50J, 70B ) actually pay the techs, and the dealership well. The same goes for the SSC 50N Steering relay rods on the 4runners, trucks, and T100s.

On yours, it probably won't need anything, but the old stuff used that was referenced earlier commonly had worn idler arms, and toyota would pay for new tie rod ends if they were needed.

No one is "all pissy." You're bringing up two issues. Recommending work that doesn't need to be done is separate from recall work. The dealer is paid by Toyota to do the work, regardless of whether its the same rate as COD parts/labor. There was no upsell required to get the job done. It's parts and labor sales they didn't have to do anything get paid for. Except the work itself of course.
