Changing the timing belt requires removal of the crankshaft pulley. This requires HUGE torque to re-install, and there is a Toyota special tool needed to hold the crankshaft while the pulley bolt is being torqued.

If the crankshaft pulley isn't reinstalled properly, it will eventually work loose and damage the keyway in the crankshaft nose, requiring that the crank be replaced. This situation isn't uncommon - use the forum search function and note that in some instances a Toyota dealer had done the timing belt change that preceded the pulley coming loose. It's obvious that you can't just use an impact wrench to tighten the pulley nut and get a safe and dependable outcome.

If it were my truck, I'd inquire of the service manager whether or not they have the special tool and a torque wrench that'll handle the 200+ lb/ft of torque needed to do the job right. If the answer to both these questions isn't a resolute "of course", I'd not let them do the job.

thanks, i remember reading about that. i do plan on asking which tech did the change and ask tech some vague question about how hard was it to torque the bolt. If i get a ambiguous answer, the flags will be thrown.
any idea on what the exact torque is?

i would also have my t-stat changed while i am in there and also ask them to check all the pulleys and replace all the front engine seals

i just had the timing belt replaced last week in my '99. the mechanic also noticed the water pump was bad so i replaced that too. new brakes as well.

which particular seals are you talking about?

talk about coincidence, yesterday I got a coupon in the mail for dicounts on service, one of the discounts is a timing belt replacement for $249.00. What is the regular price for that job?

I just had mine (1997 SR5) done last week, i have 204,??? miles on my 4Runner and went 138,000 over before i had the timming belt changed. Yeah i know not smart, anyway since i have been behind on maintenance i had the following done at the dealership.

-Timming Belt replaced
-Water Pump replaced
-Front 3 Drive Belts replaced
-Transmission Flushed & Refill
-Oil Change
-Radiator Flush & Refill
-Fuel Filter replaced (been a while)

I added a True Flow Filter (big improvemeent) i must say i forgot just how good the 4R could drive. I had the the 4R tuned up last month after the Check Engine light came on and the it was a bad ignition coil. So i replace the wires, plugs and the bad coil. My truck got the clean bill of health from the service tech and i'm all good.

Sure no problem, all of that stuff cost me $835.?? Add $50 for the filter and worth every penny too.

just got it back a couple of hours ago, new t belt, water pump, oil pump and crank seals, new accesory belts. $524.00

Was this a quote or the actual price you paid? The dealership here in Florida quoted me closer to $900. My truck is going in on Wed. of this week. The next post shows he paid $835, so my price is in the same ball park. I am assuming then that you went to an independent dealer.

Thanks.

that is the price i paid. I don't know what you mean by independent dealer, if it's a toyota dealer then it's a toyota dealer. 524.82 is what i paid. Maybe the price of labor is much cheaper here, yaknow, since it's so close to the border....
