Well, internet advice is worth what you pay for it :noidea:
I was able to take my front air dam off, but it's been a while. I thought I took bolts off, but maybe it was so ripped that maybe it did start as one piece. Even so, it looks like the redesigned bumpers on the gen 5.5 vehicles are one piece. Sorry, looks like you'll need need to just ram it into a rock to justify buying a full aftermarket bumper.
I don't have to worry about this because my wife had a sneezing fit in traffic a while back and rear-ended a boat. The only damage was to the plastic grill and a few plastic parts on the bumper. But now when I get the money together I don't need to come up with an excuse for a plate bumper.

I understand there is always the possibility of damage, but if approached with caution and attentiveness, that risk can be heavily minimized -- trust in the vehicle. I am not so worried about pin-striping, but the fact that my bumper is 1 piece means that it is at the highest risk. I am hesitant to cut the trim on it but I will remove the small piece that channels air back to the engine and covers the recovery points.

I actually have heard of inlaw jokes, but telling a spouse's parents to stfu seems rather rude...and given that you have no qualms about saying that to your own inlaws, I fail to see where the joke is.
A joke would imply that there is some prank or comedic intent behind doing or saying something. Telling an inlaw to stfu doesn't seem funny in my book, but if you think it would be funny please go ahead and do it (maybe record it too) and let me know how it works out for you....who knows a few of us may even get a laugh out of it...

You say that now, but once you start going down some rugged roads you'll see there is the possibility of some damage. Yes it can always be mitigated (sliders, technique, recovery gear, ect.) but that doesn't eliminated that risk all together.
I would accept that possibility up front so as to not be rudely surprised when/if something goes wrong.
The front bumper is a plastic trim piece, and is definitely vulnerable to scraping and/or breaking in undulating terrain. In the short term, you can get a lift to raise it up, but expect to get it bruised somewhat. In the long term, you're going to want a front bumper of some sort.

You're gunna get it dirty and pinstriped. 4Runners won't break on the trail, that's why we bought toyota. If you're concerned about body damage be conservative on the trails. Let's be straight up here: the most you're probably gunna do on your first couple off pavement drives could be tackled in stock Impreza. Happy Wheeling!

My vote is for you to take it wheeling. If you land damage, tell your wife it happened while parked at the mall. Do really think she will not allow you to take it to the mall again? NOPE. Happy Trails!
