The look of the 3rd gen, IMO, is almost timeless. They are getting older but they still don't look old. However "the gold packages" of the 90's are just simply out of style and date the entire vehicle in a bad way. Not what you are asking, I know, but had to give my 2 cents. To answer your question - they indicate nothing other than the buyer liked gold better at the time. Back then, you saw gold emblems on a lot of camry's as well. I didn't really like it then, but it really looks "old" now.
As for the replacement cost, you could always just debadge the entire thing or take them off and change them yourself. Black would look good against certain color bodies. Not sure what color yours is though.
So if I wanted these replaced, how much do the black or silver emblems, cost?
if this is true then i just threw away 695.00 as i sanded mine down and painted them black
