I highly doubt that the emblems are plated in real gold; if they were, anybody with a putty knife would have stolen them a long time ago.

Acording to my window sticker the Gold Package was $599.00

Also my brouchure says "emblems plated in weather resistant 24 karat gold."

I don't particularly like them but the previous owner payed alot for them and I dont care enough to change it. haha

I actually sold my gold 4wd emblem a while back and have my 4Runner and SR5 emblems just sitting in my parts cabinet.

Yes I have an entire cabinet devoted to my Runner pieces and parts...

So if gold floats your boat and you want them for cheap-to repaint or whatever... just private message or email me if you don't want others on here to know about it...

14K or 24K either way- that was one of the first things I noticed and wanted to change out on mine...$695 that is just ridiculous.

The look of the 3rd gen, IMO, is almost timeless. They are getting older but they still don't look old. However "the gold packages" of the 90's are just simply out of style and date the entire vehicle in a bad way. Not what you are asking, I know, but had to give my 2 cents. To answer your question - they indicate nothing other than the buyer liked gold better at the time. Back then, you saw gold emblems on a lot of camry's as well. I didn't really like it then, but it really looks "old" now.

As for the replacement cost, you could always just debadge the entire thing or take them off and change them yourself. Black would look good against certain color bodies. Not sure what color yours is though.

I agree 100%, definitely makes them look dated. Mine has the gold package, I just repainted my front "T" (the one in the grill) Graphite. I used the same paint I painted my wheels with.

And yes fella's, it's real gold plating on those emblems. Mine look like hell though so they're all getting sanded, primed, painted and cleared. The tiny bit of gold plating that is on there is pretty much worthless IMO.
