Gonna be one of those days...

So I finally got the 95 3.0 together the other day, am kind of rushing the last few stages just to get it running. I had questions about the whether or not the rings were bad or just the burnt exhaust valves, went ahead and rebuilt the top end anyway. So I am very anxious to see if I wasted a ton of time and money on a bad short block.

First I had a ground wire disconnected, no big deal, took about 10 minutes to figure that one out. Then it took me a day to figure out that there was not a drop of gas in the fuel tank, once I put gas in it, I was able to get it to fire up, but not really stay running. Wound up messing with the distributor trying to get to TDC because the timing was off. Yeah, should have looked at the shop manual, cause I thought something so simple would be a piece of cake, not today. Took the distributor out and reset TDC about 4 times, each time putting a breaker bar on the crank bolt and adjusting to TDC by hand. Got it so close to running, but would occasionally backfire thru the throttle body, yup something screwed up. So I called it, and actually took out my shop manual to see how the distributor should be installed. Had it wrong, what an
idiot(me). So this morning, I go out to the 4Runner, thought I would give it
another go. Pulled the cap, tapped ignition til close to TDC, then went to put
the breaker bar on the crank bolt, and I couldn't find it!! Yes, I know where the crank bolt is and what it looks like. I could not find the crank bolt. I swear I could feel where the crank bolt SHOULD have been, and it wasn't there. (Yes, it was there the night before) I didn't break it, definitely not going to fall out, or even shoot out. I KNOW it can't not be there, but I'll be damned if I didn't spend 10 minutes trying to find that stupid bolt. So I closed the hood, washed my hands(literally and figuratively) then went to work. I pray that I am just an idiot, because I am sitting at work knowing my
crank bolt is missing.

I guess sometimes ya just need to step back and collect yourself to get a fresh perspective. Wondering if maybe the missus didn't take it while I slept, I'll take a look tonight, wish me luck.

OK, so now I really have a problem. Got home and took another look, and sure enough, the crank bolt was missing! Had put a wrench on it the night before to spin the crank to TDC, so it was there and tight less than 12 hrs ago. Found it sitting on top of the frame beneath the battery, no damage to it or the 4Runner.
I thought I torqued it down pretty good, but I guess not. Here's the thing, my 3.0 has yet to truly run, did a bunch of cranking, short periods of running, some backfires, but wouldn't really call it running. Isn't the stupid bolt right hand thread? and doesn't the engine run clockwise? even if hand tight it seems impossible for the bolt to vibrate completely out like that. WHAT did I do wrong?

Shoot me, please...:redbrick:

No idea how the bolt ended up there. But when I put my 3.0 back together, the key on the crank wasnt out far enough to fully catch the pulley. Before we realized that it would ALMOST run, after it runs mint.

Huh, never heard that one before, but then again I seem to be running into
quite a few first's on this vehicle.

Well, last night I put the crank bolt back on, no damage, not even a scratch.
Then I reset the distributor to factory specs, turned the key, fired right up.
purred like a kitten, idles great, no issues. Amazing what happens when you read the manual.

Glad you could get it figured out!!

..effin weird about that bolt not being there though. Haha.

Thanks, am glad it was minor, not something I expected.

I have to say, after getting the 3VZE running, that's its not as bad to work
on as I thought. I think the worst part was redoing all the water bypass hoses,
good luck on that.
