Good Deal? Looking to buy my first T4R

I've been scouring the forums for the past 6 months and think I am ready to make the plunge. I currently have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma DC TRD OR. It's getting up there in age and I like the looks of the 5th gen T4R.

I am considering buying a used 2012 TE w/KDSS & eTune/Nav. Garage kept with 30k miles on it. Looks to be in great shape, one owner, etc...

He is asking 31,500 for it. Good deal or worth it to look for something new?

I originally started looking like this too, found the recent models and basically all T4R's hold their value very well. I paid $2,000 more for my brand new '14 TE for what it's worth. Maybe you could get him down in price a little bit, but to me, it was just worth it to buy new for a small extra cost.
 
I'm no fan of dealers and their sometimes iffy warranties, but I would not want to give an individual the kind of $$$ you are talking about. You walk away with a set of keys and a title.

Buying used, you might be able to get some kind of warranty from a dealer.

I agree with the person who spoke before me. Pay a little more and get a brand new vehicle.

We looked for the same and all of the 2012 TE's we found were in this price range so I wouldn't say that is bad
 
We just passed on a used '11 SR5 Premium ($30,490/31k mi) for some of the same thinking Lester said. Though this one was at a dealer and had some factory warranty left, you just never know what it has been subjected to.

I look at some of the pictures members have posted here and while I drool all over them, the "shopping" part of my mind says, "Maybe I should buy new so I know the history!" Haha. :bolt:


(And yes, for a few thousand more we could have a new one anyway as others have said.) ;):
 
The sad truth is a new one is more than. Just a thousand or two more. With tags and dealer fees on top of a base price of $36,000 we are talking closer to $40,000 than we are $30,000. I bought certifed used with an extended warranty and I'm very happy.

I have negotiated a 2014 trail w/o kdss for $34000 a decent but certainly not the best price according to the 2014 OTD price thread. Here in co there are no trails W/o kdss so it had to be special ordered, in different parts of the country you could prob get a better deal. Point being saving $3000 is not worth it for a used vehicle. You have to pay tags and tax new or used....
 
Here's a breakdown of a negotiated $34,000 new car

T4R $34,000 (which is below invoice so amazing negotiating)
Tax at 6% $2040 (based on sales tax here)
Destination $550 (non negotiable)
Dealer fee $895 (non negotiable)
Tag transfer $200 (varies)

That's $37,685 OTD (out the door doesn't include your trade or money down)

Now a used one at $30,000
Tax $1800
No dealer fee (Carmax or private party)
No destination (Carmax or private party)
Transfer tag $200

Total $32,000 for a two yr old 4Runner

That's a difference of $5,685 which if financed will add over a $100 to your monthly payment. Newer is nicer, but used is cheaper. All depends on your budget.

$34,000 includes destination and dealer fee. But that $34,000 also includes a new warranty and Toyota care ~ $200

Don't get me wrong I am busting my ass to find a used one, but the used ones hold their value like gold. I was really interested in a 2010 TE in Utah. Certified used, no nav, 45k miles. They want $31,000(and would not budge). Thats only a $3000 savings for a 4yr old car w/ 45k miles, plus I would have to drive my trade in to Utah. I would buy that car for ~27k or 28k in a heartbeat over the new one.
 
The prices are still high on the 2012's and up but I feel there are good deals out there on the 2011's. I found one with low miles, 3rd row and sunroof (for the wife) for well under $30,000. Plus the new front end just hasn't grown on me yet.

True SR5 deals are out there. But if you are after a trail edition...good luck
 
I wonder if the Martian-like appearance of the 2014s has helped the earlier 5th gen 4R's keep their value?

Yea...I know...I have one.
 
So I found another one that may be a better deal. Thoughts on below?

We just got quoted almost $4K under MSRP at an Autonation dealer. I can't see buying used when new is so damn close the same price.
