Good deal or not????

I am looking to get my first 4runner and so far I have come across one that is in my price range... Please help by giving your feedback on if it is a good deal. Thanks

2000 SR5 for around $7000, it has:
- 4x4 (not sure if it has lockers)
- 230,000 miles
- standard transition
- TRD Supercharger
- Paint looks good (Green, not sure if its original)
- OEM roof rack
- tow hook
- 3" OME suspension lift
- fender flares, no running board
- TRD headers and Magnaflow exhaust
- Sunroof
- Tires are 33" Micky tompson's but they are worn pretty bad, will need to replace them soon

The inside looks clean and everything is reported as working fine. This will be my only vehicle and I am wondering if 1. it is a good deal, and 2. do you all think there will be problems in the near future (within a year) with engine/mechanical problems?

If its been taken care of 230k is not horrible. I didnt mod my 96 til 185k and its at 200k now.

try and see what and when regular maintenance was done? when was the last timing belt and water pump change? last tranny and coolant change??

ask if the rear axle seals have been done and if its an automatic, does it have an external tranny cooler or is it original OEM? search Pink Milkshake for any more info on that...

Im sure others will fill in what Ive missed.

I personally would pass. That 4runner doesnt have a rear locker (I know which 4runner you are talking about.) If it was my only car I would try to find one with less miles. Modded cars with high mileage tend to scare me. It is a rare find though.

Thanks Duhockey and rjaudi. I figured that I would be having problems with it due to the millage and mods putting strain on the engine, I thought that if it only lasted me through the year I would be done with college and be able to buy a engine if the thing blew. I will look into all the maintenance but I know he is going to tell me its the best of the best for everything... I also found a 4x4 97 SR5 with 135k Miles that just had its timing belt and water pump replaced (this one has no mods on it though) it has:

- auto trans
- sunroof
- Lockers
- Towing hitch
- =( no fender flares, running board, or even OEM roof rack

This one is for around $5500

I bought my 2000 SR5 with locker, 103k, and all the optional extras except a tow package for $7700. Sure it doesn't have any mods, but you typically shouldn't pay much for those used like that (lots of mods doesn't tend to increase the re-sale value much, if at all)

That 97 sounds like a much better deal. It may be missing those little extras you mentioned, but everyone on here ditches their running boards, so you can probably pick those up real cheap (if you even want them at all). Roof rack you should be able to find at a salvage yard or off a part out.

This 4runner sounds like trailmix's (his user name on here) old 4runner on here, if that is the case then I would not hesitate to get that one. Here is a pic of his old one

Really? Most guys on here, that is the first change they make. It looks alot meaner without the running boards.

Of course I don't have a lady that needs to get into it, and if you have a lift, that make it even worse... But hey, that's partly what sliders are for right ?:biggrin2:

The roof rack you would certainly want to pick up somewhere. But I think you could do that without too much trouble.

Why are they selling it already? Dalton (Trailmix) just sold it to them in May...

That was my friend Daltons old 4Runner. It is a beautiful truck and I went with him when he bought it from a guy in Katy. That guy owned it for the majority of its life. He drove it from Houston to Louisiana where it would be parked for 2 weeks at a time, because the guy worked on offshore oil rigs. The paint is original however it isn't perfect. It does have a few sunspots on the grille and there are a few touchup marks. The guy from Houston put a clutch in it and did the timing belt. It doesn't have any fuel mods besides a FTC which just re****s timing until open loop. Dalton did a good bit of maint. to it such as spark plugs, wires, axle seals, fuel filter, air filter, etc. It is a solid truck for the miles. However it does need some work. It BADLY needs new tires and the front shocks were shot when Dalton sold it. It would also be wise to throw some bigger injectors in there to make it not run so lean. $7000 is still too much for that truck. Dalton paid $6100 for it originally. I'd talk him down some more. The guy that owns it now isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

I joined last night lol! It is a nice truck and runs bad ass even for the miles. It can keep up with my runner with fuel mods. If you can get a deal on this truck go for it. The only thing I would be concerned about is head gaskets since it doesn't have any fuel mods besides a FTC. If the current owners hasn't popped them yet (you would be able to tell by oil in coolant/or white smoke upon cold start up) I'd throw some bigger injectors and fuel pump in there and go for it! It is a great looking truck and is very rare. The 5 speed in that thing is slick and it wheels bad ass even without a locker. I wouldn't pay more than $6k for this truck.

The fact that it has a HUNDRED THOUSAND miles less than the green one.

Take the 2 grand you'll save on the 97 and you can do a sh!t ton of work to the suspension and wheels and tires. Skip on the blower and get it regeared, it'll be just a powerful at the wheels and the engine will last AT LEAST 40% longer.

That 97 looks like a good option. However if you can get the 2000 for 6k it maybe worth it. True it has more miles. But it is also a way rarer truck. You get the 99+ upgrades which are a huge bonus to me, 5 speed, sport edition, already lifted, supercharger (worth $1000 alone), TRD headers (worth about $400), plus the green looks bad ass. I think that if a truck is properly supercharged there is no reason it wouldn't last as long as a naturally aspirated truck.
