Hey guys, T4R newbie here. I'm looking to purchase my first runnner (wanted one for years) and was wondering what you guys think about this truck. I test drove it and it seems to drive well. Was thinking about offering $3500. Good deal? Thanks for any input.

Yeah the trailer hitch is def rusted. I was gonna sand it smooth and hit it with some rust converter. I checked underneath for rust and it's looks pretty decent considering they use salt on the roads here in MD. Thanks for your reply. Do you guys think the price is fair with the mileage?

Look around the radiator and check for a pink substance. This engine 5vzfe is known for the tranny cooler failier (its inside the radiator) and thus coolant and tranny fluid mix. Its a pain in the ass, happened to mine about 100 miles after I bought it.

Yes, pink coolant is good, that's the Toyota coolant. And seeing in the overflow is good, it's suppose to be there. I like the 1999s, they built them good that year. It has some nice upgrades over the 1997s and 98s but are not a computer controled as the 2000s and up. Throw some 265/17/16 BFG all terrains on there and you are ready to go.

NADA.com shows the retail value at $7300, the trade in value at $4200.

Do you know about the strawberry milkshake also known as pink milkshake?

Thanks and it seemed to ride higher than the '97 I test drove. And BFG's were exactly what I was thinking! It's like you're a mind reader or something...haha

He went down to $3800 so far, gonna see if I can get it a little lower though since it could use a timing belt also.

I have read about the strawberry milkshake in the 3rd gen buyers guide thread. Awesome thread btw.

Definitely a good idea to barter if the timing belt and water pump haven't been done. I just threw a set of BFGoodrich 265/70/17's on mine...absolutely love them! Is that the spare tire holder hanging down in the back?

The tbelt and water pump were done at 108k, has 215k on it now. So i figure it should be done soon. Might attempt it myself.

I think that the wires hanging down are for the trailer hitch? Not sure to be honest...

Yeah, its time to be done again. That could be the trailer wiring, I would double check though. With you living up there, I would crawl and look into ever crook, cranny, crevice for rust. That salt is no joke which I'm sure you're aware of!

I think $3,800 is a good price. The inside looks clean on those flicker photos. And the 1999s usually have the tallest springs. If the front springs have a blue/yellow paint code on one side and blue/pink on the other, it has the tall springs. Yes, the rust can be a problem. My was rusty underneath when I bought it in 2008. Replaceing the exhaust cleaned a lot of it up. I also spray the chassis with fluid film in the fall and it really controls the rust. The main part I'd be concerned about is the rear axle. Some have been know to rust so bad they leak gear oil. Maybe tap around the bottom of the "pumpkin" with a hammer to see if it's still solid metal?

^ didn't see any pink stuff. I thought the engine was the 5vz?

Sorry, I have a 95 and 00... lol... Yeah its the 5vzfe, the pink milkshake if it happens looks like frothy milkshake spewing from the overflow tank. If it's happened before there may be a crusty pink residue around the radiator housing or close by. Just a heads up, not trying to scare you.

So... the username... is there a back story on that? :lmao:

lol but seriously, we can't even type re**** or ******* spears without it getting blocked

I had to read the thread just for the user name. That's great.

As for the truck, I think it's fair to say I've owned more 3rd Gen's than anyone else on the forum. And I'd buy it at that price. As long as it's not rusted to hell. But, use the TB/WP and also the rear bumper to negotiate with him. It'll need a new rear bumper soon to pass inspection. Bumpers & trailer hitch being rusted aren't that big of a deal, just look the frame and body over real well. Look at all the door skin seams, push the weather stripping back in the door jambs and look for rust there too.

Last but not least, if you do pass on it, let me know. I may take a run at it if you don't.
