Good Find "Tire Carrier"

"My 91 has the body mount for a swing away carrier. They are plugged with hard rubber plugs. However my tail gate does not have any bracket to hold the carrier."
As someone that works for an auto manufacturer we do use a lot of common parts, it can be factory to have mount points available even when an option is not used.

agreed. probably just there on all early second gens and the carrier was probably an option.

Willy I was able to get to the brackets of the truck at the junk yard but I was not able to pop it off the welds I broke my big flat head screw driver in the process and didnt have a pry bar. Sooo... Im just going to make my own brackets some time next month because of time.
I was able to get the carrier and the latch as well as the trim piece for the tailgate.

Its all good. The problem with the tailgate is the reverse lights are different so the trim piece doesn't fit properly going to have to fabricate it as well. My Dad is a pretty good welder Ill get him to help me with the fabrication.

I'm about to start this same project. My situation is a little different. My 4runner is a 1990 and originally had a swing gate. It was rear-ended and the old tailgate was replaced. The PO kept the swing gate, the old tailgate and all the bits and pieces. So, fortunately I already have the correct rear quarter panel and all the parts, I just need to retrofit the new tailgate.

I sold my 93 and went 3rd gen but actually I would try to find a 4runner tailgate with the correct stuff. It a real PITA and the mounting bracket on the tailgate is one of the hardest parts. I went to a local junkyard and found three 4runners with the correct tailgate.
