Good grocery getter?

This morning, after dropping my two daughters off at high school, driving past the grocery store on my way to work, my TE got one of its rear tires in a slick patch (ice?) and the traction control kicked in as the tire spun. And I gave it more gas just for laughs.

It can be a big pain in the ass trying to switch between 4W and 2W going between dry and snowy pavement in the Trail Edition. Limited is different.

A front wheel drive unibody car with snow tires on can easily beat a 4Runner in 2W mode in the snow on city streets. Throw in AWD with a computer watching over it and its really something, My previous vehicle was a Subaru Forester.

Only with the 4Runner in 4WD in heavy snow all over the place does it have an edge. And that edge goes away immediately the moment you take your foot off the gas pedal, all cars have brakes on all four wheels and ABS.

(OK, my 1988 RWD Ford F-150 had some proportioning valve that as you put more weight in the back, it would put more fluid to the rear axle so you can use the weight to help stop. Don't know if Ford still does that.)

I would have bought the 2013 Highlander if it had a better second seat, it had some strange stow middle seat, and with the third seat up there is nothing left. At least in the 4Runner three kids could sit across.

I thought the middle center seat of the 2013 Honda Pilot royally sucked. Honda is coming out with a new Pilot for 2016, but I always wait for at least the second year. I tried lots of cars and they sucked. I went to an Acura dealership in my jeans dirty from work, I got to sit in every rear seat in a space of like 10 minutes because nobody bothered me, guessing I couldn't afford one. Avalon was OK. 4Runner wasn't bad, I got to keep my man card, and I always wanted one since 1988 but couldn't afford it.

Outback was a big car but the radio was lame and the second row middle was uncomfortable, and the CVT was weird, I could see my wife complaining about it.

1.2 MPGs isn't that much of a hit to take to have a Frame, Transfer Case, and a real 4WD system.

Except that the OP doesn't need any of those things. None of them. So why get a vehicle that has them? What is the value of a low-range T-case to someone who will never, ever use it? What is the value of BoF construction for a vehicle that spends all its time on paved roads? That's extra weight they don't need.

How about this plan... Get her the 4Runner now, then I could have a cool truck in 5 years when she wants a minivan? I'm hoping to get some test drives in this weekend and that will narrow it down. PS Only Japanese car we've ever owned was a Trooper I had 15 years ago in college. It was fun to drive with a manual transmission.

neither did I but I still bought one :)

now my next one is gonna be either another 4runner or a highlander, getting old and want more features/comfort.

A minivan makes a lot more sense for a family for so many reasons.

A unibody SUV is what you get when you need a minivan but are in denial.

A BOF SUV is hardcore.

Honestly, if it was me I'd just get something smaller and cheaper now since you're only expecting one kid at the moment. If she wants the Subaru now, she'd be happier driving it and you'd save A LOT of money. They're also much safer vehicles that really hold their value long term. The Outback starts at $24k new and does everything you need now, plus it gets better mileage (33mpg vs the 4runner's 18mpg.) Don't expect mpg above 20 in these new 4runners. I average 17.5mpg combined city and highway and I drive mostly highway. The 4runner will be close to $40k, if not over $40k if you buy new.

It sounds like YOU really want the 4runner, but it seems kind of silly to stick your wife in a vehicle she doesn't want for 5 years. In 5 years the newer, cooler 4runner will be out and you'll probably want that one.
It's your money and it's your relationship, but as mentioned previously in this thread: Happy wife = happy life!
I'm only giving you my opinion since you're asking for our advice. I love my 4runner, but it doesn't seem to fit your needs.

I have unibody SUV and minivan...i am a confused person! :D

BOF SUV is hardcore? Plenty of folks using their BOF SUV to do minivan jobs...wouldn't that be the worst case of denial?:tape:

See this thread and read my posts: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-topic/188909-2016-honda-pilot-3.html

Naw, you're not confused. You are evolving in your journey of self-actualization :)

BOF = hardcore: What I mean is that BOF is no compromise. It's a truck. It rides like a truck and drives like a truck. I use my 4R as a DD. Just last weekend I used it to run out to get some milk for the kids :gasp: Then again, I can't afford to run a DD and a dedicated offered toy like many of you lucky bastids. :)

I really like the new Pilot.

Thanks! That's exactly what I asked for. Though I wouldn't say she doesn't want a 4-runner; she doesn't really know they exist.

A little trick I found out last year... she usually likes to buy the first thing she sees (doesn't like shopping). When I was looking for my Silverado she was actually surprised I didn't buy the first one. After the 3rd one, I was on my own :p

Shoot...the way I see it is. If you want something, get it. Some things in life you can't explain. If it makes you happy, by all means do what you wanna do. If you find out it was the wrong choice down the road, chalk the loss and learn from it.

While your at it, get the inferno TRD Pro so your wife would be a totally bada$$ hopping out for a milk run.
