what size paint chips are we talking about here. tiny ones you can barely see or deep ones right down to bare metal? if it were me and they were very minor I'd use the paint pen and touch them up and ask for a price reduction or something. I find the toyota pens to work very well on my blizzard pearl

There are about a dozen chips. Not down to the bare metal but down to the primer. I had thought about touching them up myself. I use Dr Colorchip and find that it works very well. But with that many chips, I'd rather just have it repainted. If they don't do a good job, they'll have to redo it until it's perfect.

Have them document that it will be done at no cost and to your complete satisfaction. If I got that statement in writing, I would have no problem letting the dealership fix the issue.

You could buy a Landcruiser for 6 months, and then resell it. But there is absolutely no chance of them loaning you one for 6 months.

OK, cool. If you trust them and have a history, no problem. When a dealers tells me something like "the deposit is fully refundable, I make them write down jut so they can't back away.

It'll probably come out looking just great.

I'd let them paint it. No one will know when they're done. The paint is brand new on the vehicle so matching shouldn't be a problem. You really don't have another choice unless you pass on the delivery of it.

My 2010 Trail which is Classic Silver needed a new rear bumper and I was concerned about the paint match (especially being 12 years old) so I took it to to Toyota.
They matched the classic silver perfectly. New bumper looks like it was there from day one.

I wonder how much a high quality wrap would be of the color you choose. Not judging, just finding it curious to pay $3800 for a color change. The inner cheap-o frugal person inside of me is wondering.

The cost to wrap a 4Runner is likely more than $3.8K if you go to someone proven who does quality work/uses quality material.

Pretty much. As the real cost of a vehicle is depreciation, you can't argue the value of Toyota trucks. Even though the prices are going higher and higher, resale values are always very high, so it's easy to just keep rolling that equity into a new vehicle every few years. I wonder how Toyota's resale values will be effected by these new, more complicated, turbo/hybrid setups. Resale values have always been high because of the hundreds of thousands of trouble free miles you could get out of Toyota's V8s and 6 cyl motors. That may not be the case going forward with the new setups, like what is in the Tundra. They are already having problems with the turbos. And then there is the whole hybrid battery pack.

I'd have them just paint it and make sure they keep it off the record. If you go to sell it later nobody is the wiser and I'm sure their body shop would do a good job.

If it's not an insurance claim, there is virtually zero chance it will hit a CarFax report. I wouldn't worry about that at all.

As for the repaint, you're likely to end up with a better/thicker clear coat over the whole thing than it came from the factory with, which is actually a plus. As one other poster noted, getting a high quality ceramic coating is a good move.

my wife's vehicle had a wooden parking garage gate close on her roof. took it for an estimate and it showed up on the carfax even though no claim was made (settled privately). we sold the vehicle long ago with no issues, as long as you have the paperwork it shouldn't be a big deal

This particular dealer has several dealerships....the Toyota dealership where I bought my 4Runner, a neighboring Subaru dealership and a very large dealership in nearby Conn that sells Ford, Chevy and VW. They have their own Toyota certified collision center at the larger dealership. So they're going to have their collision center do the work. I'm thinking they will just take care of it and not be making some type of insurance claim.

how does that get disclosed to a potential buyer? for example 4runner falls off a truck and needs a lot of cosmetic and mechanical repairs - that would get tracked at the VIN number right?

That was my thought and concern. They may just do it behind the scenes without even creating any work order or anything with the VIN on it. But, I'm not sure the legality of that or what needs to be documented. Also, what if the paint does have issues down the line and there is nothing documented towards the vehicle in regards to the repair? Could get messy.

Again, just playing the role of "fearing the worst." No clue what actually happens and how things get documented to CarFax or other agencies.
