Good news for the tranny lag..new tsb fixes!

Took mine for the 1st oil change (5k @ 8months), also had them do the fix. There is/was a difference, smoother shifts and it no longer hangs in 4th:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/69024-hanging-4th.html

Only bad part is that it took them 2 hours to change the oil and do the update, and I even had a scheduled apt. :rockthrow::ybrick:

Dealers should be FINED for doing oil changes at 5K when they should be happening at 10K -- unless you specifically requested it of course as I know some people do with the first oil change.

The oil change interval is 10,000 miles - dealers should be mandated to inform their customers about this

Thanks for the TSB info - we fall in that range, but I haven't noticed the behaviors (either) so thinking we are not going to have it flashed. On the other hand wife does 95% of the driving in the 4Runner so I will have to take it for a test drive

From my service record....

"~|~CUSTOMER STATES WHEN MAKING TURNS AT 15MPH STEP ON GAS RPM REVES FEELS LIKE VEH IN NEUTRAL SEARCHING FOR A GEAR TO GO INTO THEN HARSCH SHIFT NOTED ~|~TSB ~|~ROAD TEST VEHICLE VERIFIED OWNERS CONCERN DELAYED ENGAGEMENT NOTED PER TSB-0166-10 PERFORMED CALIBRATION OF ECM SOFTWARE. ROAD TEST AFTER REPAIR TO VERIFY PROPER OPERATION NOTE: TRANSMISSION WILL NEED TO ADJUST TO DRIVERS DRIVING HABBITS T1=04 T2=99 "

This was interesting: DELAYED ENGAGEMENT NOTED PER TSB-0166-10

That would not be the hard shifting.......

I think most of us are doing the 1st change @ 5k (our choice) then every 10k on down the road. What I did find interesting was the sticker in the upper windshield states I should return at 10k for another change, not 15k. Also, their on-line service sign-up still shows oil changes every 5k, not every 10k like the revised maint. guide shows.

Yes & No, the delayed engagement to me was tranny lag....now if you kept your foot on the gas the rpm would rev and it would eventually 'find a gear' but not in a gentle way (hard shift). From what I have read on here people, like me, feel the lag and feather the gas until it picks a gear, not allowing it to do the hard shift. I know others were getting a hard shift on a down, from 2 to 1. All I know is that this TSB fixed all my tranny complaints :)

I have the free two-year maintenance. Any bets what they tell me when I go in at 5k? :boink:

Please see my earlier post. Whatever you call it, its the same thing. Mine did all 4 of the tranny problems and the TSB fixed it.

I had my oil changed at 5k and 10k but now I'll probably just do it every 10k. Still doesn't feel right waiting 10,000 miles for an oil change.

tranny issue resolved with TSB

Just had my 5k maintenance service and the TSB update. They changed the oil at 5k and now the little sticker in the upper left corner of the windshield says next service due at 15k.

my first oil change at 5k is just fine with me, I didn't even ask them to do it. But from now on it will be at 10k intervals.

The TSB fixed all my tranny issues (hard shift, lag etc). My VIN fell within the range.

The 4R is even nicer to drive now.

.

I understand this so sorry for being unclear.

The way that was copied and pasted it looked like the TSB stated tranny lag. Previous comments on the TSB itself was that it only stated hard shift. From that "we" gathered that they were the same.

That is not how I read that copied text - it specifically stated DELAYED ENGAGEMENT NOTED PER TSB-0166-10

sorry to dig up an old post but,

@westwind @gamer: thanks guys for the info

i just emailed a guy at my usual toyota service center with the info to see if anythings up. hopefully i'll know something soon :D

Tranny/5000 service

Hi guys I am new on this forum I bought my 2010 4runner limited blizzard pearl white three weeks ago and I two have notice a lag on the tranny at low speeds and at higher speeds too! I was recently driving the wife and kids down to the shore doing about 60 and trying to push it to 65-70 and it would not want to excelerate as much as I press the gas pedal. Also I notice last night I do have the oil change sticker that say 5000 mile service my ending vin numbers are 25207.
Thanks

Picking up my SR5 on monday, better not have tranny lag. I just finshed 60k on a 2010 Highlander Sport. The highlander absolutely had tranny lag.
Also, the highlander got A LOT faster as I put miles on.

If it does, it is probably a simple computer algorithm that they'll download. Mine has the hard shift at slow speeds. It might have the lag too. Compared to the Titan I just traded, the 4R is certainly not a drag racer. I do have to say the Titan's tranny was awesome.

has anyone in Houston had this done? I spoke with my dealer and thye claimed that they have not heard anything??? I know it is there but i have not had time to drop my car off for a whole day.

I'm not in Houston but can verify that like many folks in this thread my 4Runner was plagued by not selecting any gear at low speeds for several seconds which I attempted to counteract by using more throttle. This didn't help the transmission find where it should be - it was very annoying and at times it seemed pretty unsafe. When I took it in for its 10k service I asked for the service bulletin referred to in this post. The service manager basically told me I wouldn't get anything done the 'computer' didn't recommend and that the bulletins were supplied by VIN. My VIN was outside the scope of the original bulletin mentioned in the thread (It is a November build) but it still triggered some sort of fix to the technician. My ECU/ECM was re-flashed and honestly, it has made a HUGE difference, the truck drives differently - predictable at low speeds and a little less 'peaky' with the throttle down. It seems like the powerband is a bit more linear/docile - but most importantly the idle/low speed issue is gone. It is still plenty quick though...

I had my trucks ECU flashed in Dallas - mine was within the VIN range of the TSB and it is a night an day difference - I was very happy when I got my truck back.

I brought mine in today for the tranny lag amongst other problems and of course they would not flash it due to my VIN being out of range. They said it is normal and will adjust to my driving habits. They also said dont worry if it blows up because it is under warranty and Toyota pays them very well to fix things like that. That was one of the most outlandish statements I have ever heard a service manager make!!! I have 5k on it now so I wasnt surprised that they didnt want to do anything other than balance my tires for the 3rd time...
