I have a friend that sells Herbalife and I like the idea of replacing 2 meals a day with a good balanced protein shake. Does anyone do this that could help me pick a good plan/product?

About me:

32 yrs old
5'11"
265lbs

Want to lose 50lbs

Thanks guys!

exercise and eat clean..

find an exercise routine or plan that works for you.

if you lack motivation, discipline, etc. i'd recommend finding a crossfit affiliate in your area and give that a go...

Hey, I am about to leave the office and would love to help with this. I can write more later. I am 5'11" and was 209 now 183 give or take days. 24-28lbs lost depending on meals etc. This happened within 2 months I guess "Aug-Sept"

Like I said I will give more info later or PM if we need to. I did the Advocare 24 day challenge, "google or youtube it" I can PM some links later, and tell you how I did it.

Now I just eat better and eat less, still eat junk some as well and still get to drink some booze ;-)

My protein shake is:

Intek Evolution - Cookies and Cream
1 scoop
6 or so ounces of skim milk
2 reduced fat oreos
small hand full of non salt almonds
5 ice cubes from an ice cube tray
Put in a blender
tastes amazing, just like a good milk shake or blizzard..

Umm........isn't this a website for cars? Some people post the most random stuff. At least try to incorporate 4runners into you post. For example: Which protein shake would give me the most energy to install my ARB locker.

Good old-fashioned chocolate milk using fat free milk.

Just as good as any marketed protein shake/mix.

Sadly that chocolate milk post is untrue. lol

Meal replacement shakes are pretty much a fad, and really only work for short term weight loss (notice i said weight and not fat).

I am not sure if you are just trying to lose weight in general or mostly the fat and keeping most of whatever muscle you currently have, but the in general its 70% diet, 30% exercise. Eat as clean as you can and work out regularly be it cardio, weights, or both.

As for protein shakes (NOT MEAL REPLACEMENTS)
EAS is a decent brand.
Optimum Nutrition makes one of the best whey drinks, a bit pricey nowadays.
Currently im using Dymatize, tastes pretty good: slight aftertaste.

Use fat free milk, one cheat meal a week, make your food in advance so you don't buy fast food or crappy food when ur hungry.

Im not sure what herbalife does or what they put in their meal replacements, but two drinks a day does not sound like what will put you on the right path.. I would look up intermittent fasting if you are still wondering about less meals a day though: i did get an improvement from it, but it got hard to consume enough calories in a 4 hour window for me and i just got lazy lol.

I use weight gain 4000

Okay ill add my experiences. I've been an avid lifter for a lot of years. I've tried every supplement under the sun, legal and not. So I am truly experienced and this advice comes from experience.

Don't waste ur time buying into marketing. It's all a lie. Buy the cheapest priced whey protein isolate that u can find. If u are lactose intolerant try goat protein. The isolates remove most of the lactose enzyme tho and u may get away with them.

Stop drinking shakes with milk. Milk is for babies or to put in ur coffee. mix ur shakes with water. A good thing to add is cold milled flax seed to up ur fibre intake and it adds kind of that nutty flavour.

These are not meal replacements either. U cannot substitute anything for the macro nutrients u get from real whole foods. Eat smaller meals more often, like every two hours maximum

Try to limit carb intake. Of the three types of calories, ur body needs protein and essential fats, u do not need carbs to live. If u are gonna eat carbs, eat clean carbs. Meaning no white flour products and eat lots of fibre with the carbs to help "wash" it out of ur body. Stop eating carbs after supper. Only lean proteins. Ideally the majority of carbs would be consumed in the morning and would come from fruit or nuts.

Now for exercise!!! Don't go all bodybuilder and think just lifting weights will lose stored body fat. That's not how it works. Weights are great but don't solely rely on them. Do a nice warmup for 10 to 15 on a bike or treadmill whatever than a light stretch and into 45 minutes of resistance work. After the resistance is when u are gonna do the most fat burning. Back to a cardio machine but u need to monitor your heart rate to keep it in the gay burning zone not the cardio zone. So a bit slower pace but still enough to get a great sweat just not out of breath.

second best fat burning time of day is first thing in the morning after a very very small meal.

Hope that helps. Remember diet is truly 80% of the equation when it comes to results.

Thanks a lot man. Basically what I'm getting is you replace 2 meals with their shakes (soy&whey mix) has lots of vitamins and all that. Low in calories/fat/carbs. Then you snack on fruit, protein bars n such. And eat a protien/veggie/simple carb for dinner Here is a link to the label from the herbalife shake, what do you think?

I am trying to lose weight, not muscle. My schedule makes it tough to find time to work out, everyday. I work 12s, rotate days to nights every six weeks, and have a ten month old I watch when I'm off. I could find time to jump on the elliptical on my days off, but days I work, between commute and work about 14.5hrs.

Shakes should be used in a pinch, not as the main source of food. And if that's what you want to do, you could have done it with any protein powder so I hope you didn't pay a lot for it. I didn't check the link so I not sure of cost.

Snacking on fruit is fine during the day but you need to figure out your maintenance calories needed. Going too far below that isn't good and since you say it's hard to work out you'll lose muscle as well and create a whole new level of maintenance calories for your body. You'll also plateau faster if you drop cals too quickly.

My suggestion is to find maintenance calorie needs and start 300-500 below that. Eat 5-6 meals of whole foods. Save the shake for after a workout. And I vote for optimum nutrition as well.

Presta, 20 years ago, I weighed 269 lbs. in 1 year, went down to 170. Felt that was two low. Brought myself back up to 180. Stayed there until the last couple of years where now I am at 190 and feel great. In the same vain as redsonja, get a copy of the latest "Atkins" book. He was the original advocate of low carb, no sugar etc. etc. worked great for me. Good luck and be safe.

I was 240, went on the atkins, got down to 200......7 yrs later.....265. Not that that Atkins fault, but its also not the healthiest diet. I am looking for something to give me the nutrients I need. I need to eat about 2200 cals a day to lose weight, per the MyFitnessPal app for my droid. Lost 10 lbs using that app, but its tough to do that on the rotations when Im on days because my wife wants to eat totally diff.

Do not eat soy or soy protein. It will lower your free testosterone and can enlarge ur prostrate. Men should never consume soy.

Shakes should not replace meals. They are a supplement no replacement. A way to add more protein to ur diet without consuming huge amounts of meat.

When I'm training and eating hard I make completely different meals for my wife and me.

I also have been lifting for a while. Please lister to what redsonja said above. The only thing a have to add...yes, all protein shakes are pretty much the same...so don't need to lisen to all the hype and pay extra money. But at the same time...if your protein shake taste like poop and you have to chock it down 2-3 times a day...how long are you really going to use them. The best tasting protein shake I have used (and I have tried a ton of them) is BSN brand! They come in a red jug...tons of different flavories. Two scoops mixed with 5-7ozs of cold water...and you will think your drinking a milkshake! I think they're 100 cals and 2 or 3 carbs per serving! Best place to get them is bodybuilding.com...they have 10% off sales all the time. Shipping...no faster in the world...like 1-2 days. Good luck in your weight lost. It's good to hear people wanting to loss weight and take care of their selves.

If your looking to lose weight try muscle milk. I drink one in the morning and one after work outs. Doesn't replace any meals I just eat smaller meals with it. Helps with recovery too.

redsonja is right on the money. I've done a lot of research about weight loss. Do not replace meals with protein shakes. You need the natural proteins found in whole foods. I am 6' and weighed in at 210. It's not bad but after a lifetime of partying the weight was mostly body fat. So I wanted to shed the fat and build lean muscle. I now weigh 170 lbs. I stuck with mostly cardio and resistance training. Now I still do the cardio but I have been pushing heavy weight now that most of the body fat is gone. My routine now is 45 minutes of jogging or eliptical per day for 4 days then a sport like raquetball for 2 to 3 days so I dont burn out. Then another 30 min of heavy weights. As far as food I just started eating BETTER. That is all it takes. More fruits, veggies, nuts and less processed foods. You will be amazed if you do some research on some of the box foods you buy from the store. The things they use as preservitives or horrible and horrible for you. I drink a protien shake in the morning cause after resting for 6-8 hours your body has been fasting and will utilize protien and vitamins at it's maximum potential. I also drink a shake after a workout for the same reason. Within 60 minutes of working out your body soaks up protien for recovery like crazy. All I can say is it works.

I forgot to mention the #1 thing I noticed that started to help me lose weight. DO NOT DRINK SODA'S OR SUGARY JUICES!!! Start staying hydrated with water. Lots and lots of water. People do not realize how much of a difference staying hydrated really makes you feel.
