Good Replacement for Revos

I am on my third set of Bridgestone Revos on my 4Runner, and up until now I've been quite pleased with them. The two prior to these held up well getting 55k and about 50k miles. But this last set is struggling to make it much past 40k! It has been a very capable tire in all respects, but now it's maybe time to move on.

The set I've got now is the Revo2, and I've discovered that there are a goodly amount of poor reviews on these regarding short longevity. Did Bridgestone mess-up what many of us thought was a very good all-terrain tire with shorter life?

So I'm looking for a different all-terrain tire that will do well on-road with lower noise, and off-road, and also occasional trailer pulling. It will be driven on pavement 99% of the time, but when we camp in places like the Rockies it often means exploring the backwoods and somewhat obscure mountain back roads.

I have read a lot of good reviews on TireRack.com regarding the Geolander, Kumho Road Venture and Cooper Discoverer. I don't want to pay higher dollar for a BFG (noisier too), Michelin or Firestone Destination all-terrain. (I also don't want to consider the General Grabber due to higher road noise.)

Any suggestions of what might be a decent AT replacement for the Revo that won't break the bank?

Should I consider the Revo 3?

A little update - Talked to a knowledgeable guy at Discount Tire today about the Revo 3. They don't even have any of these in stock yet and he wasn't sure when they would come in, because they are so new. Bridgestone has definitely done some tweaking with this new version - the tread, the compound and raised it to a 60k warranty from 50k.

Discount Tire is running a special on Bridgestones in April. I could also get around $20 on each of the old tires because of them wearing so quickly.

So now I'm wondering if I should try these new Revo 3s after all. The price could be down around $155 each with the sale and prorating. I have always liked the Revo over the last 140,00 miles, but the wear issue on this last set has quenched my enthusiasm some. Decisions decisions . . .
 
i used to work at Discount tire back in the day(2004-2007). I was just there the other day and was told about a new tire that is working out great. Check out the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. Very reasonably priced and it's a 55k mile tire. Read about it on the Falken website. Also has some good sidewall tread.

I bought my Revo3’s from Discount Tire in Michigan. Ordered on Monday and they called me on Tuesday that they were in. Installed on Thursday. So they can get them... at least the Discount Tires up here. Paid $225 ea for the E’s. Same price as TireRack. TireRack also had them in stock when I checked earlier this week.
 
The Discount Tire here said they (Revo 3) are $191 each, but I don't know what rating he was quoting for (probably P).

Sounds about right. I think they were quoting $185 ea here for P rated. The E rated tires weight difference was minimal so I went with those.
 
Both the Bridgestone Revo3 or the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W are solid tires. The Falken's have been a favorite of the Tacoma guys.

Thanks for the response Mr. Discount Tire guy (or gal?)! I am a big fan of your organization!

So in your expert opinion, how do you think the Revo 3, Falken Wildpeak and Geolander A/Ts stack up against each other? (I know it may be difficult as the Revo 3 has not actually hit many of your stores - right?)

Again, my driving is 99% pavement, but I do tow a 25' travel trailer and get offroad from time to time. (Phoenix based & travel in Utah, Colorado, etc.)

The Bridgestone Revo 3 as you mentioned is a new tire so we have not had the chance to test it yet but it looks very promising, plus this tire has the latest technology available.

They may not be in the stores yet but there is a set available through Discount Tire Direct:

Any of the 3 tires should be a solid performer depending on what you are looking for in your next tire.

You bet! Just so much to like about DT!

So A/Ts under consideration now are (no order):
1. Falken Wildpeak
2. Geolander
3. Revo 3

I read good things yesterday in Consumer Reports about the Falken & Geolander. Even though Revos were rated by CR a few years ago, they have now completely dropped off their radar - I have to assume because of issues including longevity.

I like the Yokohama Geolander A/T-S. Bought a second set after the 1st set wore out. I would buy them again but they don't come in 255/75-17
Found them to work great in the rain and dry pavement. Never drove them in the snow.
 
OP, be aware that the reason for the lower mileage on your most recent set of tires might be the fault of the vehicle, not the tires. Every new car I've owned has gotten the most life out of the first set of tires. After that the suspension loosens up, things don't track straight and true as well, and tire wear suffers. It sounds like you have about 150K miles on your 4runner. It might be time to consider refreshing the suspension bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends to tighten things up again. Do that and get a good alignment, and your tire wear will probably get close to what you were experiencing earlier.
 
RonJR - I had not heard that you can expect less mileage on tires on an older vehicle! I have over 180k and there is a little rattle going over bumps that I've suspected might be in the front suspension. I thought it would disappear when I got new Bilstiens (the Xreas was shot) a couple month ago, but it didn't.

Around how much would all that cost me to have done?

BTW - The local Toyota dealer who replaced my Xreas with Bilstien 5100 and did an alignment, didn't say anything about worn suspension items. Wouldn't they have notice something then? (I have not noticed anything loose in steering either.)

Geolanders Sound Best for Us!

I made a trip to a local Discount Tire to look at Falken AT3s and Geolander ATGO15s and see both tires in person. The closest store only had the Falken in stock. I liked the looks of it - fairly aggressive - and had some discussion with a knowledgeable sales person. He then told me a store a few miles south had the Geolander in stock, so I went down there to look at it.

Turns out that the 2nd store manager has the Geolander on his truck and really likes them. The tread pattern is not as aggressive as the Falken, and didn't even look as aggressive as my current Revos. But after discussions at both stores I think I will go with the Geolander.

The reason is I don't do nearly as much offroading as I used to, but I think the Geolander will handle it when I do go off road (mostly forest service roads and similar). I've looked at reviews and CR until I'm little tired of researching (says a lot for me), and the Geolander always comes back to the top of the list, or near the top, in most categories. So, yes I know, the Geolander doesn't look all gnarly like some A/Ts, but it seems it should serve my current purpose well.

Is there any thing else I should be considering? Otherwise, when I get back from travel, the Geolanders are going on in a couple weeks!

Also, DT is running a $60 rebate in April on Geolanders, so YE HAW!!!

Glad to hear you were able to see both models in person. As I mentioned to you in PM, I run the Geolandar A/T G015 on my personal vehicle and have been very pleased with the performance they deliver - I'm sure they'll suit your needs well too!

GO15 vs. A/T-S

THANKS!! Hey - just noticed there is a Geolandar A/T-S in addition to the GO15. The A/T-S looks to have a slightly more aggressive tread and has a 50k mile rating verses 60k for the GO15.

Is the A/T-S the same basic tire with just more aggressive tread? (I think I also read somewhere the A/T-S is being discontinued)

The A/T G015 has replaced the older A/T-S and utilizes Yokohama's latest technologies. From an aggressive tread pattern standpoint, I'd say they two are similar in person.

For reference, the 265/70R-17 A/T-S is discontinued and no longer available.

Might be something as simple as front brake pads rattling due to inadequate shimming (happened to me once... truck sounded like a can of nails every time I went over a bump).

Tires-wise I'm also considering the Geolander 015 to replace my Pirelli Scorpion ATRs (that I was very happy with but are now discontinued). Have you had them installed yet?
 
I'm in a similar boat as you! I need to replace my Nitto Teras since they're 7+ years old and the tread is down.

Do any of the tires your looking at have the "snowflake/mountain" symbol on them? I'm trying to avoid chain control in the Sierras.

Anyways, let us know what you end up going with! Id be very interested to hear since I'm in a similar situation.

I've been looking at the BF Goodrich KO2s and Hankook Dynapro AT-Ms.

I'm running 275/55/20Rs right now on my 2005 SR5 4WD.
