Well... I never really had anything happen with me and my 4Runner... story worthy at least.
I guess I can recall one thing.
Well I was kinda being a jerk.. but here goes.
There's a road I'm sure most of the orange county people have heard of that runs through the canyons, Live Oak Canyon Road. It's a very twisty road and hundreds have crashed, many have died. For instance, there's a tree dubbed "Porsche Tree" because on two separate occasions, a Porsche crashed into that tree and the drivers died.
This took place about 9 PM. I had 4 other people in the car.
The speed limit is only 35 through the whole road. It's widely used by the off road community as the road leads to a popular canyon with a trail, Holy Jim's.
So while on my way through, I was going 35 - 40 miles per hour, and came up on a stupidly god awful Land Rover Freelander going maybe 20 miles per hour. The road is over 6 miles long and there was a ton of it left. Cars were piling up behind me wondering what the hell was holding up the road.
I learned an old technique of overtaking while racing (I used to be a little road racer with my friends... miss that) which involved shutting off your headlights and leaving the parking lights on while you follow them. Whenever we'd do that, the person in front would pull over or let us pass.
Well I did just that, only the driver really didn't take notice to it. So I flipped my lights on and off, kinda flashed them for a few seconds.
Nothing. I was sure as hell not crazy enough to go on-coming on this hell of a 2 lane road.
Finally, about 4 miles later, I think he got the clue as he pulled over and let the million of us pissed off folks pass by.
I was planning to head back to the city but randomly decided to make a pit stop at Holy Jim's.
The five of us in the car being way too much weight, there was not a way I was going to off road. We treaded lightly through the trail. Well, our "light tread" came to a quick stop when I got stuck behind a red Volkswagen Vanagon. Okay... as I still have no idea what the hell a van like that was doing out there... it was there, and going SLOW.
Just to add on top of that, the van was in the middle of the trail, not enough room to pass on either side. I didn't flash the lights or anything. I just kept behind him. A Tacoma pulled behind me, ready for some fun, now stuck as well.
So now this Vanagon was starting to swerve back and forth. He finally stuck to one side and I began to overtake him.
All of a sudden, the ****er cuts across and clogs the whole trail with his van and flings his door open.
I was already going at least 20 mph, and with all the weight and the loose dirt, I was not going to stop. I just barely squeezed past this guy's door and luckily didn't take it and the driver out with me.
So now I'm sketched out. Why is this driver trying to make me stop? Does he have a gun? WTF?!!!!!!!!!
So I pulled way ahead quick, and knowing Holy Jim's Canyon, theres a dead end. I knew he was going to catch me sometime. I shut my lights off and pulled a U-Turn. I flipped them back on and drove towards the van. Gladly he didn't notice it was the same vehicle, but I passed him. I noticed him in my rear view smacking the brakes, Tacoma still behind him.
So now I'm like ok... I'm just gonna ride this out. Easy.
Wrong.
The Land Rover piece of shit from before was now coming the opposite way, and tried to block me in also. I didn't care, I was not going to stop, I gunned it past the mother ****er and I would've taken him out with me.
I drove nearly 50 mph on that road back to the main road, where then, I just got the **** out the short way back to Santa Margarita Parkway.
I am in no way afraid of a bLand Rover or a Vanagon but you never know what they're packing out in the pitch black canyon where no one can hear you scream. I know if I squashed that guy I wouldn't have stopped.
Call me a jerk.
So that's my only real actual story I guess.
