Goodyear problems

OK, here we go. About a year and a half ago, I bought the Silent Armors in 265/70/17 (dealer got me a buy 3 get one free, out the door with mounting and balancing for a little over $500). Lately, after 40,000 miles, I have noticed a lot of cracking and dry rot on all 4 tires. Plenty of tread left, I could probably get another 40,000 out of them, but the dry rot had me worried, so I called the parts guy at the dealership.

This parts guy Jeff is not your typical dealer flunky. The dude is totally cool, badmouths the GM and owner, tells it straight, no bullshit. He said yep, the Silent Armors are notorious for that, let me call the Goodyear rep. He calls me back in 10 minutes and says he can replace all 4 for FREE under warranty. I say great...but in reality I didn't want those tires again...but free is free, so yeah, great.

Well, the tires come in, and 3 out of 4 are defective, with road force readings that are off the chart. So...he tells me I can pick any tire I want. I looked at Yokohama G051, Continental Cross Contact LX...and have decided on the Toyo Open Country HT, mainly because Jeff has them on both of his trucks and he SWEARS by them.

So...once I get them installed and ride on them a bit, I will post my opinions of them.

Anybody here have them on their trucks or know anything about these tires?

P.S. - For all you Michelin fans (and yes, I am a big fan of the CT) I asked about those and was told I'd have to pay the difference, which came out to about $200....so I agreed to try the Toyos.

Ok...wow...i am crossing the Goodyear products from my wishlist! I wonder if the Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor owners are seeing this problem.

I was thinking of the GYs, but have not heard too many good things about them.

I will be buying a set of tires in the next couple of weeks. Likely to go with Yokohama Geolander A/T-S or Bridgestone Revos but can't make up my mind yet.........

Heard a lot stuff about the GYs being stiffer due to the number of plys that they have and stiffer tire compound not lasting all that well either. I don't hear much about Good Years in general. No real firmness from folks that just use them over and over. Lots of folks that say that they are good tires, but not the best.

We'll see since my wife's Subaru just got them last week. God willing they will be good tires for us. First set of GYs we have owned........

OK. As big a research fanatic as I am, I have been researching the Open Country HTs on the internet, and most of the reviews are very positive for what I want - low noise and good wet traction. It's just too bad that Tire Rack doesn't carry them, bc the reviews on that site are generally dead on.

Once I get them installed and ride on them for a few weeks, I will report back.

Jury may still be out.

No tire production line will be perfectly, absolutely blemish free in each and eveyr tire they make. Not Micheling, Not Bridgestone, not Goodyear--No car company is perfect either, Even Toyota can make a lemon once in a blue moon.

Now, Goodyears has had some pretty mediocre products compared to the best tires out there. However the SA has a pretty high satisfaction rating on Tirerack. Could this dry rotting be just a statistical lemon? Do we have more reports of dry rotting that shows a pattern of mediocre QC from GY?

I think more information is needed before we cross the SA off completely,
