goofy security system?

3rd owner 97 t4r. trying to find out how security system works. lights flash each time I use remote. Sometimes the chimes work. Used remote to unlock today and the alarm went off. Pushed buttons on remote, nothing. after inserting key and starting twice, alarm finnally went off. Owners manual says nothing. Also can't figure out what second button on remote is for.

If you hold down the top button that turns the alarm on and off. As for the bottom button I have no clue.

I have an aftermarket alarm, and what I need to do is open the driver door, put the key in the ON position and press the button that has to two dots on it to set, or disarm my alarm. Hope this helps, I am the second owner and had to play with mine.
