Got rear ended in my 4runner :(

Just as a follow up. The insurance company said it has $3000 worth of damage and the vehicle is "valued" at $3200, or I could buy it back for 600 and they would cut me a check for $2600 w/ the salvage title. I'm really disappointed as I paid $5400 for it just 8 months ago. They don't understand the collector value, and I haven't been able to find other 5 speeds for sale to compare it to.

I may just buy it back, buy another 4runner, swap any parts I want to keep, and then part it out or sell it.

I also might try to get to get an adjusted rate on my next 4runner to keep myself from getting hosed incase this happens again.

Crazy.

On a MA auto policy the settlement language is ACV, Actual Cash Value. Basically meaning what would that vehicle actually sell for today on average not CL ads with high ask prices. Do you use an independent insurance agent for your policy or did you buy insurance direct from the company e.g. Gieco? If you have an independent agent ask them to help assess the value and how the company determines settlement value. Either way I would look at auto value sites like Kelly Blue Book and NADA to get values and compare to their offer.

Also know that the Ins Co has some room in their first offer. Whether you keep the truck or cut your losses there is a little room in that first offer but not much. If the websites have higher values show that to the adjuster and counter offer. They will up their settlement number if you can provide data. If the sites don't show a higher value (and they might not) I would counter with +20% or so. Too high of a counter offer and they won't budge.

IMO if the truck is really nice, low-ish miles etc I'd consider keeping it and take the cash with the salvage title and swap the hatch and rear bumper and anything else. Salvage title or not it will still be a good truck for you for years to come.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
